Watch: Fernando Alonso’s brakes catch FIRE during Emilia Romagna GP

Fernando Alonso started the 2024 season with high ambitions of recreating his last year’s success. However, the Spaniard has been fighting in the midfield amongst the likes of McLaren and Mercedes. To rub salt in his wounds, the Imola GP weekend has been horrendous for him as he qualified last for the race on Saturday, and recently during the ongoing race day, his brakes were spotted to be on fire.

Fernando Alonso is the oldest racer on the grid. Recently, the Spanish driver committed to a contract extension with Aston Martin and looked to commemorate this extension with strong finishes. However, luck has not been on his side since and an example of it has been witnessed at the Imola GP.

The Spaniard was spotted trundling around in the pitlane with his left front brakes on fire.

The Aston Martin driver started from the pitlane and aimed to make progress. But his plans were brought to an abrupt halt as his brakes caught fire, and he had to jump in the pits to get his tires changed and to cool down his brakes.

Fernando Alonso did not have many expectations from the Imola GP

The old fox is known for his ability to make moves up the field during Grand Prix weekends. On the other hand, Imola is known for his peculiar characteristics and the Spaniard was expected to go well as he has several wins at the track.

However, Alonso did not have much expectations from the race after a subpar qualifying session.

Well, nothing, the truth is, nothing. Finish the race, go home and think about Monaco . This is the second most difficult circuit to overtake, only behind Monaco. Fernando Alonso said in an interview with SoyMotor

The Spaniard lamented the track’s characteristics and claimed it to be the second-worst track on the calendar for overtaking. Imola has always proven to be an extremely dicey track for wheel-to-wheel action.

Alonso was not able to make any progress during the Emilia-Romagna GP and finished an underwhelming 19^th only ahead of DNFed Alex Albon. Thus, a long debrief would be held in the Aston Martin garage to iron out the issues ahead of the next race.
