Chiefs draft pick lands with AFC West rival

Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach gambled with a sixth-round draft pick, and the gamble didn't pay off. 

The Chiefs waived DT Keondre Coburn, a sixth-round draft pick out of Texas in 2023, to make room for WR Mecole Hardman and DL Charles Omenihu on the 53-man roster. It was a calculated risk, but one that Kansas City felt they could take. A day later, Coburn finds himself on a new AFC West team. 

According to the league's daily personnel notice, Coburn was claimed by the Denver Broncos. He'll now get a fresh start after appearing in just one game for K.C., but this time, he'll be playing for an AFC West division rival.

The Chiefs hoped to get Coburn back on the practice squad to develop him for the future. They'll now face him as a foe in Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season when they travel to Denver. 

They'll likely have to alter their plans for the future at the position, too. Neil Farrell Jr. and Charles Omenihu are currently the only defensive tackles in Kansas City under contract beyond 2023.

WR Montrell Washington, who was also waived at the same time as Coburn, cleared waivers and is an unrestricted free agent. Look for the Chiefs to bring him back on the practice squad as special teams coordinator Dave Toub suggested they might.
