Raiders NFL Draft Prospect: S Jaylon Carlies, Mizzou
Joe Puetz-USA TODAY Sports

The Las Vegas Raiders have officially hired their permanent head coach and general manager, so they can now turn their attention to the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Antonio Pierce-Tom Telesco era is officially underway, and the two can now collaborate on scouting players they feel can fit what they want to do next season and for the next few seasons.

The Raiders were an impressive defensive team in the second half of last season but could look to add more talent to that side of the ball to push them into postseason contenders.

One player they could consider in the later rounds of the draft is Missouri safety Jaylon Carlies. He enters the draft after a Tigers career that saw him post 220 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, nine passes defended, three sacks, and nine interceptions.

Carlies led the Tigers in tackles in their 2023 Cotton Bowl victory over Ohio State. At 6-foot-3 and 204 pounds, Carlies has some of the best size in the draft class.

On tape, Carlies flashes as a run defender. He uses long strides and speed to get downhill to stop ball carriers for minimal gains. He also has good play recognition, showing the ability to click and close on routes in the passing game.

Despite this, Carlies struggled in coverage in 2023. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed a 71.4 percent completion percentage when targeted in coverage, allowing 358 yards and five touchdowns. He is tall and big for a safety, which does not allow for optimal speed for that position in the NFL.

Because of his stature, he would likely be best playing as a nickel safety at the next level. His tall, long frame could be effective against slot receivers and tight ends. He plays fairly physically as well, which helps him play the run.

Carlies is currently projected to be a day three selection or an undrafted free agent, but it is early in the draft process. Carlies could do well for himself in the coming months and improve his stock.

If the Raiders are looking for a defensive back who can thrive in the run game in the nickel, Carlies could be an appealing option.

From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
