Steelers’ Round 1 Draft Strategy Might Involve Georgia WR Ladd McConkey: 'Get The Fourth Wide Receiver In The Draft'
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Early in the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers made waves by trading away their star wide receiver, Diontae Johnson, leaving a significant void at the position. Many fans anticipated General Manager Omar Khan to work his magic with another blockbuster trade or savvy deal to address the gap. However, as the draft draws nearer, it's becoming increasingly apparent that the Steelers may turn to the draft to bolster their receiving corps.

Peter Schrager, renowned for his insider connections across the league, has been deeply entrenched in draft discussions and has even crafted numerous mock drafts himself. While his assessments involve thorough player evaluations, his invaluable insights often stem from insider knowledge, sources, and whispers circulating within NFL circles.

Recently, Schrager shared intriguing details on The Pat McAfee Show, highlighting a rising star among wide receiver prospects who has garnered attention and climbed draft boards. This prospect emerges as a compelling option for the Steelers, potentially aligning with their 20th pick in the upcoming 2024 draft.

The name is Ladd McConkey the wide receiver from Georgia. He goes as far as calling him the fourth best wide receiver in this class. Schrager's perspective adds an intriguing layer to the Steelers' draft strategy, sparking intrigue and speculation among fans and analysts alike.

"When they made the Diontae Johnson trade [to] Carolina, it was like, okay, wide receiver's next, Omar's not done. It seems there's been a bit of a stall on that. So if it's not [Brandon] Aiyuk, and it's not [Courtland] Sutton, well they could very well get the fourth wide receiver in the draft."

Schrager disclosed that the Steelers have shown interest in certain players, but progress in these discussions has hit a snag. He suggests that the Steelers may now shift their focus to the draft in search of a wide receiver to complement George Pickens. He thinks McConkey is that guy for Pittsburgh.

"The way it stacks up, you've got the big three and then I've spoken to teams and it's like some teams love Thomas at LSU," Schrager said. "I'm telling you, there is a big love for McConkey as potentially the fourth wide receiver in this draft, as crazy as that might sound… He has jumped up draft boards, teams love meeting with Ladd McConkey. Footwork, smarts, all of a sudden, guess what? He ran a 4.39 40."

Schrager's prediction has stirred considerable anticipation, suggesting McConkey could potentially land in the first round of the draft. Despite prevailing speculation placing him in the second round, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has positioned him as the ninth-ranked wide receiver, indicating his potential to make an impact at the professional level. Reports from NFL teams indicate a significant surge in McConkey's draft stock, with many viewing him as the fourth wide receiver to be selected.

Steelers' Potential Draft Target Ladd McConkey's Scouting Report

In the 2023 season with the Bulldogs, McConkey's stats may not immediately stand out, tallying just 30 receptions for 478 yards and two touchdowns in eight games. However, scouts are buzzing about his undeniable talent and skill set. Derrik Klassen, a scout for Bleacher Report, went deeper into McConkey's potential in his comprehensive scouting report, shedding light on the type of impact player McConkey could become.

McConkey brings a wealth of positives to the table, making him an intriguing talent in the eyes of scouts. His exceptional acceleration allows him to hit top speed rapidly, particularly evident in his route-running prowess. With good speed, he poses a threat downfield while also demonstrating reliability in executing various routes. His agility and change of direction skills are notable, highlighted by quick feet and smooth hip movements. As a route-runner, he excels at manipulating defensive backs and smoothly transitioning at the breaks. Additionally, his above-average concentration and hands in traffic showcase his ability to thrive in contested situations.

However, there are areas of concern that warrant attention. His notably skinny frame raises questions about his ability to withstand the physical demands of the NFL. Furthermore, his poor play strength presents challenges in battling through contact, both at the line of scrimmage and during routes.

Additionally, his struggles in jump ball situations limit his effectiveness in contested catches, as he lacks the consistent ability to win aerial battles. Despite these drawbacks, his intriguing skill set and potential for growth make him a prospect worth monitoring closely as he progresses in his football journey.

It doesn't appear likely that the Steelers would use their 20th overall pick on McConkey, but Schrager floated it for a reason.
