18x major champion Jack Nicklaus urges Rory McIlroy to ‘take advantage’ of his ability to hit long on golf course

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus seems to have a special advice for Rory McIlroy . The 18-time major champion was recently spotted at the 50th edition of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. In this appearance he spoke on several players including the North Irish golfer.

Rory McIlroy has had a topsy-turvy season so far. Despite being one of the top players of the game, he has struggled a bit to emerge as winner. This year the 34-year-old star faces the prospect of stretching his major championship drought to a decade. Jack Nicklaus though thinks he should start taking advantage of his ability to hit long.

Speaking on Golf Channel regarding this, “the Golden Bear” expressed that McIlroy sometimes put himself in position he does not want to be in and should instead start using his ability to drive the ball far away to his advantage.

Rory will do a little bit like he did there on 18. On occasion, puts himself in a position he really didn’t need to be in… I’d like to see Rory take advantage of what he can take advantage of; his ability to hit it long, his ability to hit it straight.

A week ago, this strength of McIlroy was seen in action as he hit a historic drive at the Bay Hill during the Arnold Palmer Invitational. At the par-4 10th hole, the four-time major champion hit 401 feet drive, leaving the spectators in awe. This could be something he can work on in the future to improve his gameplay.

Recently McIlroy also spoke about Nicklaus. He would name him along with Tiger Woods and other golf legends as a reason for not leaving the PGA Tour and joining LIV Golf.

Jordan Spieth claims he should have not commented on Rory McIlroy’s 7th hole controversy

On the first round of The Players Championship, controversy broke out as Rory McIlroy took a drop at the 7th hole while playing with Viktor Hovland and Jordan Spieth. This development though soon turn the major discussing point as both golfers got involved with the rules official to discuss McIlroy’s drop ball position.

After the event, McIlroy opened up about it and said Spieth was just trying to do the right thing. While the North Irishman fired an under par round, both Hovland and Spieth finished with high scores. Spieth now claims he should have not commented on the situation back then.

The three-time major champion however did admit that he actually did not see where the ball landed. He expressed that he wanted to help just so that he (McIlroy) does not get caught later.

I only walked over because it seemed like, hey, let's just make sure everything is all right, which I wasn't even planning on getting involved and maybe shouldn't have... I thought maybe I could help. Jordan Spieth on Rory McIlroy’s ball-drop controversy.

McIlroy was recently penalized for such a bad-drop at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. During this event, he was handed a two-stroke penalty for it. Fortunately this was something he avoided this time out and finished the first round with a score of 7-under 65.
