There was at least one wiseguy waiting on more than a few of the holes. Despite that, Sergio Garcia's charm offensive was mostly well received by the galleries during the opening round of the U.S. Open. Some three weeks ago, in the midst of a hissing match with Tiger Woods, the Spaniard made a racially tinged remark about inviting his rival over for dinner and serving fried chicken. Widely criticized at the time, Garcia has apologized to Woods both privately and publicly. Yet there were some lingering questions about how he'd be received at Merion Golf Club this week by a sometimes-tough Philadelphia sports crowd. ''There were a couple here and there, but there was - I felt the people were very nice for the whole day. I think that almost all of them were behind me,'' Garcia said afterward, ''and that was nice to see.'' The same unfortunately, couldn't be said for Garcia's golf game. He shot a 3-over-par 73 Thursday, and that after ...

Tiger Woods' past dominance unattainable at 2013 US Open

If its major championship week, it must be time for another whirlwind round of Tiger Woods retrospectives. Will Tiger break his five-year major drought and win his fourth U.S. Open this week at Merion? Will he hit enough fairways to contend on the weekend? Will there be another rules incident like the one at the Masters? If he does win, will this mark the greatest comeback in...

Tiger Woods Stars In USGA Spot Advocating Picking Up The Pace Of Play

The USGA has dropped their latest ad, and it features none other than Tiger Woods. Check out the quick PSA which is in favor of folks not lagging on the golf course. Decently creative creative for a group of folks who aren’t known to be so. We wonder if Sergio Garcia has seen this. [Darren Rovell] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

Did Tiger flick Rory’s ear during the U.S. Open champions dinner? (photo)

With severe weather already delaying play at the U.S. Open on Thursday at the Merion Golf Club, I guess we have to improvise in order to get our golf fix in any way possible. So how about a delightful piece of photographic whimsy showing Tiger Woods gearing up to flick friendly rival Rory McIlroy [...]The post Did Tiger flick Rory’s ear during the U.S. Open champions dinner...

Tiger off his game - so what?

Tiger Woods used to win golf tournaments, even majors, with his B-game. He stopped admitting to such things once he realized that pronouncements like that really annoyed his fellow professionals. They were, after all, trying hard and only won when they were at their absolute best, and for most of them even that wasn't enough. But that doesn't mean Woods stopped beating...

Tiger Woods Surprised With Question From Neice During News Conference, Arranges Dinner Plans on Spot (Video)

If you’ve never been in a Tiger Woods news conference, it’s quite a scene. Woods is generally the only golfer who draws enough journalists to fill up the interview room under the press tent, and even then there are usually more throngs still standing in the back. Moreover, every reporter wants to get their question in, and only a small fraction get answered. So, it probably helps...

US Open Betting Preview: Reasons why Tiger will not win in 2013 at Merion

The golf world has been rooting for Tiger Woods to return to his old habit of winning big tournaments, and sportsbooks are no different. A Tiger that wins big tournaments is good for business and with four wins in eight starts this year, business is booming for golf bettors. So when you combine his improved play with his transdendant personality, it's no surprise Woods is the...

Gallery Heckler yells “Fried Chicken” at Sergio Garcia

Before Sergio Garcia teed off on hole #1 to start his third round at the US Open, a fan in the gallery yelled “Fried Chicken!” in reference to the insensitive remark Garcia made towards Tiger Woods.  You can tell that Garcia heard the comment given his head nod prior to getting ready to address his shot. Garcia has had to deal with hecklers all week and perhaps that will make...

Tiger fights rain, greens at Open

Tiger Woods' rain-shortened first round at the US Open one to forget.

Column: Golf and 'Crime-Stoppers' a dangerous mix

(Eds: Adds AP Photos.) By JIM LITKE AP Sports Columnist ''Hello, Merion Golf Club. May I help you?'' ''Yes. Can I speak to a rules official from the U.S. Golf Association, please. I saw a twig move.'' ''Sir, thousands of twigs get tossed around here every day. It's a golf course.'' ''Yeah, but this one was moved by Tiger...

Follow the fun at tiny 13th hole at Merion

With the tease of an ace on each tee shot, golfers count down to the 13th hole. It's where the shortest hole at Merion Golf Club waits. And at the U.S. Open, that makes 13 the life of the 18-hole party, the off-campus bash down the block from the staid library. Playing in his second U.S. Open, unheralded Scott Langley and Morgan Hoffmann noticed they were turning into Tiger...

Angry Rant Friday

Will not be served at Merion this weekend. We are not ******* around today, people.  It is one of those days where we get everything off of our barrel chests.  It has been awhile since my normally mild-mannered and civilized self has done this but after watching a few hours of Chris Berman make sweaty, drunk, and gross love with Roger Maltbie yesterday, I am all out of sorts. ...

2013 U.S. Open Preview & Predictions

Photo Credit: CHARLIE RIEDEL/AP It’s the start of the U.S. Open. The best day of the year for most golfers because it means you’re even-par and tied with the rest of the field for at least a bit. But some golfers might as well go home now to save the embarrassment. Even though technically everyone in the field has the chance to raise the trophy on Sunday, only a select few really...
