Golf best bets: Long shots to target at the WM Phoenix Open

The year of the long shot on the PGA Tour continues to roll on without a hitch. Five tournaments, five winners that started the week at 100/1 or higher. The streak might come to an end this week with two-time reigning WM Phoenix Open champion Scottie Scheffler returning to TPC Scottsdale, but we're still going to throw some darts down the board and hope the World No. 1 has an off week.

Here are the two long shots we're targeting in the outright and finishing position markets.

Tom Hoge (+11000 FanDuel)

One thing we know about TPC Scottsdale is it's a ball strikers' paradise. Scheffler, Brooks Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama all have multiple WM Phoenix Open wins under their belt, and what do they all have in common? They all have immaculate tee-to-green games but struggle with the putter at times. Well, TPC Scottsdale has some of the purest, easiest greens on the PGA Tour schedule, so those types of players have a better chance of contending and winning here than almost anywhere else.

Enter Tom Hoge, who fits the mold this week. Hoge is absolutely on fire with his irons, as he's gained multiple strokes on approach in each of his last eight starts. The 34-year-old gained 2.19 strokes on approach per round at Pebble Beach last week, which marked his best iron performance since the Players Championship nearly a year ago.

Hoge has also caught fire with the putter in recent weeks, gaining strokes on the green in three straight starts. The veteran has two top-25 finishes in his last four starts at TPC Scottsdale, and we're expecting another strong performance based on how he's playing right now.

Top-20 finish: +320
Top-40 finish: +115

Billy Horschel (+15000 FD)

TPC Scottsdale is a golf course where players can enjoy consistent success year after year, as evidenced by the three two-time winners over the last decade. One of the players who loves this tournament is Billy Horschel.

In 11 career starts at TPC Scottsdale, Horschel has eight top-40 finishes, two top-10s and only one missed cut. He's missed the cut in two straight starts, but he was on a nice run of form before that with six top-20 finishes in his previous eight tournaments. He also gained strokes on the green in seven of those eight starts.

Horschel isn't the ball-striking wizard that typically thrives on this golf course, but he sure does love putting on these greens. He's a great target in the top-20 and top-40 markets.

Top-20 finish: +360
Top-40 finish: +140
