Golf best bets: Outright picks for the Valero Texas Open

There's only one more week until the best players in the world reunite at Augusta National Golf Club for The Masters, but we still have one more stop on the PGA Tour schedule before golf's Super Bowl. The PGA Tour remains in the Long Star State this week for the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio, a long golf course that demands accuracy off the tee, precise approach play and soft hands around the green.

Despite its length of 7,435 yards, TPC San Antonio has been friendly to shorter hitters who consistently find the fairway. Corey Conners, J.J. Spaun, Andrew Landry, Brendan Steele and Martin Laird are just a few of the past winners who prioritize accuracy over distance off the tee. With that in mind, we're targeting players who can pepper fairways off the tee and hit a ton of greens in regulation with their long irons to take home the title this week.

Collin Morikawa (+2800 FanDuel)

Looking at the top of the odds board, Morikawa is by far our favorite target in this range. The World No. 16 has drifted to 28/1 because he's coming off a missed cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a T45 at The Players Championship, and we think it's time to pounce on the discount.

Morikawa is a perfect fit for TPC San Antonio. He doesn't pound it off the tee, but the American ranks 19th in driving accuracy and first in distance from edge of fairway. Essentially, Morikawa rarely misses the fairway, and when he does, he's not far off.

The 27-year-old is also one of the best iron players in the world, and his chipping around the green has always been underrated. Morikawa struggled during the Florida Swing, but let's not forget he won the Zozo Championship just a few months ago and recorded two top-20 finishes in California in February. This is a buy-low spot we're willing to take a stab at.

Aaron Rai (+6000 FD)

Rai took some money out of the gates, and for good reason. The Englishman is a great fit for this golf course because he drives it dead straight and hits his long irons extremely well. He ranks first on the PGA Tour this season in driving accuracy, fifth in greens in regulation percentage and 13th in approaches from 175-200 yards, which will be a crucial distance this week.

Rai is coming off a T7 finish at the Texas Children's Houston Open, giving him three top-25 finishes in his last five starts. He's also finished T28 and T29 in two trips to TPC San Antonio while gaining strokes on and around the greens in both starts. As a former DP World Tour player, Rai will be able to handle the Texas winds if they pick up at any point during the weekend.

This is a great golf course for Rai to snag his first PGA Tour win.

Lucas Glover (+9000 FD)

Veteran players who know how to control their golf ball in the wind have thrived at TPC San Antonio over the years, and Glover is a member of that group. The 44-year-old has finished solo 45th, T18, solo fourth and T14 in his last four starts at the Valero Texas Open.

Glover ranks 15th this season in driving distance, 23rd in strokes gained on approach and 10th in strokes gained around the green. The issue, as it normally is, has been his putting, but he's gained strokes on the green in three of his last four starts at TPC San Antonio. We saw Glover win twice at the end of last season when his putter got hot, and he can do the same on these familiar greens.
