Padraig Harrington made the most of his late entry into the PGA Grand Slam of Golf with a 5-under 66 on Tuesday. Harrington was picked as an alternate three days ago for British Open champion Ernie Els, who has a minor ankle injury. The Irishman made seven birdies at Port Royal Golf Club to build a two-shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson in the 36-hole event for the year's major champions. U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson had a 68. Keegan Bradley, filling in for PGA champion Rory McIlroy, had a 72. Harrington, a three-time major champion, lost in a playoff at the Grand Slam to Angel Cabrera in 2007 and to Jim Furyk in 2008. Ian Woosnam in 1991 is the only European to win the PGA Grand Slam.

Bermuda retains the PGA Grand Slam
