Hunter Mahan is not only our new favorite golfer, but definitely our favorite athlete of the moment. Today he proved that winning certainly isn’t everything, and that family does come first. Mahan was set to tee off at the RBC Canadian Open on Saturday with a 36-hole lead and ended up withdrawing once he learned that his wife had gone into labor. By leaving the tournament, Mahan cost himself the possibility of a purse of over $1 million. From the NY Post: “I received exciting news a short time ago that my wife Kandi has gone into labor with our first child,” Mahan said in a statement. “Kandi and I are thrilled about the addition to the Mahan family and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years.” Mahan was playing outstanding golf up until the birth of his child, shooting an opening around 67, and followed that up with a n 8-under 64. Yeah, so there goes a million bucks, but he will always have an opporunity to win more money, he will never have another first child. Bravo, Hunter, you made the right call.
