When people talk about the Players Championship, it all starts with one hole. The 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass is as exciting, and as iconic a hole as exists in the world of golf. People make 9′s on it – like Angel Cabrera did on Thursday – and sometimes people ace it. It’s awesome.

I’ve never played on an island green, but since I struggle to hit the ball onto a land green, I can’t imagine how I would fare on a hole of this magnitude. Professionals triple-bogey it. That leaves me way behind the 8-ball. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, is probably somebody I could beat But I digress.

The Players is an awesome tournament, and it’s in no small part because of this hole. Listen to admiration these guys have for the hole in the video. It’s like hallowed ground. And the best part is, it doesn’t come across as extremely pretentious like everything any announcer says about the Masters! It’s a win-win!

Tiger is scheduled to tee off at 1:49, and he and Rory McIlory are both in danger of missing the cut. That might ruin my weekend, but I”ll at least get to enjoy a few guys who play golf for a living knock two or three balls into the water at the 17th. Maybe I’ll even get to see a hole-in-one…hopefully not from Ian Poulter, though. That guy gives me the creeps.
