Getty Images    So Rory McIlroy leaves the Honda Classic midway through his second round, just packs it in and goes home.  Tells reporters in the parking lot the "he's not in a good place mentally."  A little while later, a statement is released in which Rory claims to be suffering from pain in a wisdom tooth that affected his concentration. I get that whatever the no. 1  player in the game does is big news. Switches from Titleist to Nike for big bucks?  Yup, big news. Misses the cut in his first tournament with the new clubs? Big news, really big. Gets knocked out in first round of match play event?  That's big. Plays 36 with Tiger the Sunday morning after going home from match play event? Hey, anytime Rory and Tiger do anything together it's going to qualify as big news. Just the way it is and those guys know it. Here is what I don't get: Jack Nicklaus says that Rory will be "fine" by the time the Masters comes around next month and his comment ...

Wozniacki source of McIlroy's struggles?

Rory McIlroy's struggles early on this season are causing some to speculate that his slump may be related to issues with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

Rory McIlroy Admits Walking Off at Honda Classic ‘Was Not the Right Thing to Do’

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Rory McIlroy says he should have finished his second round at the Honda Classic, telling Sports Illustrated magazine that “it was not the right thing to do” to walk out after eight holes of his second round. McIlroy was 7-over for the round and headed toward another missed cut when he hit his second shot into the water on the 18th and abruptly withdrew...

Rory has some soul-searching to do

Parents tell their kids that it's always better to own up to their mistakes, that trying to cover them up with lies will only make things worse. Kids, however, sometimes have to learn these truths for themselves. Rory McIlroy is still only 23 -- still figuring out what it means to be Rory -- and he learned both ends of that ethics lesson last Friday, when he walked off the...

McIlroy's way out of mess is to be like Woods

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer The statement released by his handlers was almost as bad as the kid's decision to walk out on the tournament. It was the first big mistake of his career, at a time when the golf world was enthralled by such a young talent. He was criticized by the press and by his peers for his selfish behavior, though there was hope that...

McIlroy leaves, Guthrie leads and Woods struggles

Rory McIlroy left before his round was even over. Tiger Woods had to rally just to stick around. And with all that drama Friday in the Honda Classic, hardly anyone noticed that Luke Guthrie showed off his potential in a big way with a 7-under 63 to take a one-shot lead going into the weekend at PGA National. Guthrie, pegged by many of his peers as a rookie worth watching going...

McIlroy feeling pressures of being No. 1

In any other sport it wouldn't be an issue. LeBron James isn't going to forget how to dunk, and Roger Federer won't suddenly lose his forehand smash. Michael Phelps isn't likely to sink to the bottom of the pool, either. But this is golf, a game so mental it can sometimes seem impossible. And Rory McIlroy is in trouble. Not with the U.S. PGA Tour, even though he...
