Of course, sports fans, gossip hounds, your grandma — everyone has heard by now that Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn confirmed on Monday via social media that their friendship has evolved into a relationship of a romantic nature. Tiger Woods made the announcement via his Facebook page, presumably having one of his handlers publish the following statement: This season has been great so far and I’m happy with my wins at Torrey and Doral. Something nice that’s happened off the course was meeting Lindsey Vonn. Lindsey and I have been friends for some time, but over the last few months we have become very close and are now dating. We thank you for your support and for respecting our privacy. We want to continue our relationship, privately, as an ordinary couple and continue to compete as athletes. Lindsey Vonn, nearly simultaneously, offered up her announcement of the two super-duper-sports-stars’ budding relationship on Facebook as well: I guess it wasn’t a well-kept secret but yes, I am dating Tiger Woods. Our relationship evolved from a friendship into something more over these past few months and it has made me very happy. I don’t plan on addressing this further as I would like to keep that part of my life between us, my family and close friends. Thank you for understanding and your continued support! xo LV And if their respective words weren’t sufficient enough, both Tiger and Lindsey uploaded photos to the interwebs of the two posing together playfully in semi-cheesy images worthy of comparison to photos sitting on the coffee table of that “too happy” couple everybody knows who revel rubbing it in the faces of their friends that they are super-compatible. jQuery(window).load(function() { jQuery("#pb_carousel-1").carouFredSel({ direction : "left", circular : true, infinite : true, items : 1, scroll : { duration : 500, pauseOnHover : false }, auto : { play : false, pauseDuration : 2500, delay : 0 } , prev : { button : "#pb_carousel_prev-1" }, next : { button : "#pb_carousel_next-1" } , pagination : "#pb_carousel_pag-1" }); }); prev next .pb_carousel_default { width: 570px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto;}a.pb_carousel_default_prev, a.pb_carousel_default_next { background: url( http://www.sportressofblogitude.com/wp-content/plugins/carousel/layouts/default/images.png) no-repeat transparent; top: 274px;}a.pb_carousel_default_next { background-position: -50px 0;}.pb_carousel_default_pag a { background: url( http://www.sportressofblogitude.com/wp-content/plugins/carousel/layouts/default/images.png) 0 -300px no-repeat transparent;}#pb_carousel-1 a { float: left; display: block; } Clearly, the Tiger Woods-Lindsey Vonn coupling has baptized the two as the most high-profile and successful sports power couple currently on the scene. But even though the two admitted to being friends before their feelings towards one another escalated, even before rumors began circulating and “heating up” about their possible romantic relationship — including how Tiger dispatched his private jet to pick up an injured Vonn in Austria in February — some statements that Vonn made during the crumbling of Tiger’s marriage to Elin Nordegren in the wake of his reputably global-scale whoremongering, Vonn was just like everyone else, including myself (see here, here, here, here…heck, just read about every post I’ve written about Tiger Woods before July of 2011, for Pete’s sake), reveling (and attempting to profit from, in more than one case) in the schadenfreude of the unraveling of the image of the worldwide sports icon. During a Feb. 2010 interview with Time that occurred shortly after Tiger’s much-publicized mea culpa news conference, Vonn couldn’t help herself as she cracked wise about Tiger’s scandal with some well-crafted zingers: And like millions of Americans, Vonn can’t help poking fun at Woods’ staged event. When a member of her Vonn-tourage tells her that Woods gave a few friends hugs after ending his statement, she cracks, “They’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re awesome, you go have that sex.’ ” The room breaks into a laugh. Then she describes a skit she would want to perform if asked to host Saturday Night Live: picture Vonn at Woods’ podium, blue backdrop and all. “There’s something you don’t know about me,” Vonn says in a faux solemn, apologetic voice. “Tiger, you’re like my idol, and I too have a sex problem.” More laughter. “That would be freaking funny.” Granted, much time has passed and more than a few things have transpired since that day in 2010, including the dissolution of Vonn’s own marriage, but for a guy like Tiger whose personal history provides abundant evidence that he can hold a grudge with the best of them, it is nothing if not surprising that he has been able to get Vonn’s comments about him and be able to pursue a romance with her. I guess being blonde, tremendously successful and extremely attractive probably helps.
