Phil Mickelson is confident multiple U.S. Open victories are in his future. “I’m excited that the tournament that I’ve played some of my best golf in is the one that I haven’t won and I feel it’s just a matter of time,” Mickelson said on the eve of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, per GolfDigest.com. “It may be this year at Pinehurst, it may not, but I do believe that will come. I actually believe I’ll win a couple.” The 43-year-old Mickelson is a U.S. open shy of completing the career grand slam. He finished second to the late Payne Stewart in 1999 at Pinehurst No. 2, where this years U.S. Open will be played. Last week, Mickelson finished second in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. “I’m really excited for two reasons,” he said. “The two areas of my game that I’ve not been as efficient as I would like in the last three or four years have turned into strengths. One of them is putting. I putted great last year. And the other is the driver. “We’ve talked a little about some of the technology, but as the clubheads have gotten bigger, my driving’s gotten worse. Having the center of gravity lower and more forward [in his new Callaway Big Bertha Alpha driver] has allowed me to make the same golf swing as my irons. It’s just made driving a lot easier. I drove it the best I ever have Sunday in Abu Dhabi when I needed to hit fairways. With these two areas of my game that I’ve not been happy with becoming strengths, I’m more excited about this year than any year ever.” The post Phil Mickelson on the U.S. Open: ‘I’ll win a couple’ appeared first on Sports Glory.

Lusetich: Tiger knows this much — he's still in his prime

What do you get the man who has everything? A billion dollars later -- if those career-earnings estimates are to be believed -- as Tiger Woods begins his 19th season as a professional, I gave it some thought and decided to give him a question I knew he wouldn't fully and honestly answer. Think of it as an anniversary gift to a man who's made a career of refusing to, as...

Lusetich: For one day, an old friend gets the better of Tiger

Pat Perez first met Tiger Woods when they were about 8 years old. "I've always been around him," Perez said. Perez, who grew up a few miles north of Torrey Pines, where he worked as a kid, has always been in the shadow of the Tiger. Who in golf hasn't? Perez just started earlier. But there was one day, 21 years ago here at this beautiful course cut into the...

Match Play hopefuls have one last chance to crack field of 64

Even without the math associated with the Official World Golf Ranking, it might not be easy to determine which players get into the 64-man field for the Match Play Championship in Arizona at the end of the month. On Tap This Week: 1/23/14

It was reported this morning that Justin Bieber was arrested in Miami for DUI and drag racing. While this news may capture the attention of the nation (for some reason), I figured we could focus on more upstanding members of society. People such as Tiger Woods. Errr, okay, maybe not so upstanding. But he is back this week and for many casual golf fans his return, for all intents...
