Sheriff's department obtains warrant for black box crash data from Tiger Woods' SUV

Investigators in the Tiger Woods rollover car accident have obtained a warrant for the black box crash data from the SUV the star golfer wrecked last week.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department confirmed the warrant to USA Today and said it is a "routine part" of a standard crash investigation and doesn't make it more likely that Woods will be charged with a crime.

"We're trying to determine if a crime was committed," Sheriff's Deputy John Schloegl said. "If somebody is involved in a traffic collision, we've got to reconstruct the traffic collision, if there was any reckless driving, if somebody was on their cell phone or something like that.

"We determine if there was a crime. If there was no crime, we close out the case, and it was a regular traffic collision."

A vehicle's black box contains data about the car's speed at the time of a collision and can also show if brakes were applied, airbags were deployed and seat belts were worn.

Last week, Sheriff Alex Villaneuva said Woods would not face criminal charges, reiterating that it was "purely an accident." If the black box data reveals he was driving while distracted, the most Woods will receive is an infraction, Villaneuva said.

Woods was seriously injured in the single-car accident and had a rod, pins and screws inserted into his leg at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center before being transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for ongoing orthopedic care.

The 45-year-old is "in good spirits" and a doctor recently revealed that Woods is expected to need a recovery time of eight to 12 months.
