2012 two year old colt champion Shanghai Bobby has been retired from racing after sustaining an injury to a suspensory ligament when winning his return to the races on Sept. 20 in the Aljamin Stakes at Belmont Park. The suspensory ligament is a ligament that runs from the back of the knee down to the hoof and acts likes a “pulley” to the hoof….it is an essential part of a racehorse’s anatomy that is used during running. (Click on the picture below and it blows up.)   “It’s very disappointing as he ran really well off the layoff and we were looking forward to going back to Santa Anita with him for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint or the Dirt Mile,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He was a really great 2-year-old, undefeated in five starts over five different distances ranging from four-and-a-half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. He displayed his brilliant speed in the Hopeful and Champagne and then showed tremendous courage to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.”   “We’re disappointed as we were looking forward to him returning to top level competition following his win in the Aljamin Stakes,” owner Jack Wolf said. “This horse has taken us on a great adventure, from his undefeated 2-year-old campaign and Eclipse Award, to his successful return at three. We are proud to have owned this special horse, and we wish him the best as he begins his new career at Ashford.” Shanghai Bobby, who won the 2012 Breeders Cup Juvenile while displaying enormous guts and determination, will join fellow two year old champions Lookin At Lucky, Uncle Mo and Hansen at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky. If you recall, Shanghai Bobby’s shining moment was when he sat just off a blistering pace in the BC Juvenile and was “exhausted” at the quarter pole yet reached deep down to fend off an on-slaught of challengers in deep stretch to win by a head.
