Houston, TX- What a scary ending in today’s second Dual in Houston. As Will Power was crossing the finishing line beating Scott Dixon by 0.8-seconds, Dario Franchitti, Takuma Sato and E.J. Viso were involved in a horrific last lap crash. Franchitti and Sato made contact in one of the fastest areas of the 1.634-mile street circuit in the streets of Houston, Texas and the contact send Franchitti’s No. 10 Chip Ganassi Honda airborne into the catchfencing. Sato would spin on the track further as Viso slammed his No. 5 Citgo/Team Venezuela Chevrolet into his car as he was coming to a stop. Luckily, Sato and Viso would walk away unscathed but Franchitti was taken out on a stretcher and sent to an area hospital. Franchitti was awake and alert talking the whole time but was complaining of pain in his ankle and back. After being transported to the hospital it was announced that the three-time Indy 500 champion suffered a spine fracture, broke right ankle and a concussion. That’s not good news for Franchitti but so much better than losing him. If it wasn’t for Franchitti’s car hitting the fence under tray first it could have been a different result. Luckily he didn’t go cockpit first which saved his life and will allow him to race another day. It still shows there’s some work that needs to be done to keep these cars grounded. I know it’s going to be impossible but what they have now hasn’t worked. This isn’t the first time the new designed car has got airborne the last two years albeit it’s the first time one has got into the fence. We dodged a bullet today but it was a horrific incident.
