Pocono, PA- For most of today’s Pocono 500 Verizon IndyCar Series race, it was looking like Tony Kanaan would come home victorious. Yes, the Team Penske trio was strong, but Kanaan was up there with them all day. The Brazilian, first took the lead on Lap 50 and drove away. Outside of pit sequences, he would lead all the way until Lap 148 when he had to pit for the second to last time. Unfortunately, pit strategy ruined his day as he was getting between 5-7 laps less fuel mileage than the Penske guys. He would always make up for it until that second to last stop as he was in third place after the pit sequence. They knew then that they needed a miracle to make it to the end on the right strategy. When Graham Rahal brought out the first and only caution on Lap 159, they ducked in under the yellow hoping that they could stretch the fuel until the end and come home with the victory. That nearly worked, but we didn’t get any more yellows as TK had to pit from the lead with three laps-to-go. He would finish a disappointing 11th at the end of the 500-mile race as the last car on the lead lap. He was visibly upset after the race and declined interviews. I can’t say that I blame him though as he had one of the best cars all day. There’s nothing more he could have done. That result isn’t indicative of how good his day actually was. One of these races something will finally go his way. Eric Smith is the Lead Motorsports Writer for Race Review Online.
