29-year-old Mike Conway has landed a ride for April’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The Englishman will pilot a second car in the Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan stable in a one-race deal with the team. Conway will join full-time driver Graham Rahal for the race on April 21st. Conway was presumed to be back with A.J. Foyt Enterprises this season after running full-time in the famed No. 14 Honda last season. He shocked the paddock in season finale at Fontana when he decided on Friday to step out of the car due to him not wanting to run ovals anymore. That decision took guts to do and I don’t blame him. On the last lap of the 2010 Indianapolis 500, Conway was involved in a horrific wreck when his No. 24 Dads Root Beer Honda got up in the fence in Turn 3 and split his car in half. He was badly injured and forced to miss the remainder of the season. He returned in 2011 with Andretti Autosport and notched his first and only career win at the Long Beach Grand Prix. He struggled on ovals though as he failed to make the Indianapolis 500 that year. Last season, he hopped in the ride with Foyt and was finally surging in the first oval of the year at Indianapolis in May. After a dismal qualifying effort he came through the field and was looking like he could be a threat for the win. Unfortunately, he got caught up in a wreck just before halfway with Will Power where he once again had a freak accident. Conway’s car became airborne and flew backwards against the top of the wall just inches for getting his open cockpit in the fence. That likely would have killed him but by the grace of God he didn’t get high enough. Conway was shaken up after the incident but walked away. After three more ovals in Texas, Milwaukee and Iowa where he failed to crack the top 15 he decided to hop out of the car in Fontana. He said he didn’t want to run ovals anymore but doesn’t want to retire. He would do road/street courses only. RLL was the first to take a chance on him in bringing him in to a race where he’s won and had success. No word yet on whether he will run more races for RLL or if RLL will run this car full-time all season.   Follow Eric on Twitter @ericsportsguru for all IndyCar news The post IndyCar: Mike Conway lands ride for Long Beach Grand Prix appeared first on Race Review Online.
