It’s been a rough year and a half since Dario Franchitti won his third consecutive Izod IndyCar Series championship in 2011 and fourth title in five years. He lost his dear friend Dan Wheldon in a crash which ended the season finale in ’11 and handed the title to Franchitti. He then had one of his worst seasons in IndyCar in 2012. Despite winning his third Indianapolis 500 in ’12 the rest of the season wasn’t how he thought they’d be. He finished seventh in the points and finished outside the top 10 in nine of the 15 races. Obviously hopes were higher for this season but things haven’t gone off to a great start. He finished dead last in 25th place in the season opener on March 24 at St. Petersburg after getting out of the pits too hot. Franchitti tried to accelerate too fast on his out lap and hit the outside wall. The day was done for the No. 10 Target Honda after a tough weekend. The series returned to action this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park for the second race of the season. After sitting 14th on the overall speed charts entering qualifying this morning he needed to gain some time in order to keep his 10 race streak of starting in the Top 10 alive. That was the only good thing he had going as he’s been strong on all the qualifying session. Today though, Franchitti’s streak and efforts of pushing his Top 10 streak going to Long Beach in two weeks ended. His lap of 1:07.2965 in the No. 10 Banana Boat Honda wasn’t good enough to advance past Group 1 of the qualifying session as he will start 17th. It’s his worst start since last year at Barber where the Scotsman started 18th. The last time he started outside the top 10 was back in June when he started 14th at Belle Isle. He would go on to finish runner-up that race to his teammate Scott Dixon. Other than that the only other time besides Belle Isle and Barber where he started outside the top 10 was Indianapolis where he started 16th and won. Maybe starting outside the top 10 could be good for him as the last three times he ended with three top 10′s and a first and second.
