Braves facts at the half in no particular order:Brian McCann’s All-Star selection is unexpected but deserved (.291 avg, .274 OBP, .536 SLG) The 54-41 (.568 win%) Braves are on pace to win 92 games this season. They are 2 wins ahead of last year’s pace at this point (95 games into the season). The 2012 Braves went on to win 94 games. The Braves have the game’s best home record (31-15), but are under .500 (23-26) on the road. Atlanta will not play a game outside of the Eastern or Central time zones for the remainder of the season. And they’ll play only 19 more games against teams currently over .500. Braves boast the second-best ERA in baseball (3.29), behind the Pittsburgh Pirates (3.07). Atlanta features the best bullpen ERA (2.62) in baseball. Despite the fact that their young ace, Brandon Beachy, has not yet thrown a pitch this year, Atlanta starters have a collective 3.59 ERA and have more quality starts (59) than any other NL team. They rank 3rd in the NL in runs scored (415). The Cardinals have scored the most runs (462), followed by the Rockies (426). The Atlanta Braves lead the National League with 114 homeruns. They rank 4th in MLB overall in that category. They’ve also struck out more frequently than any other NL team with 826 K’s, trailing only the Houston Astros (871) in all of baseball. Your browser does not support iframes. The Braves are 4th in the NL in team on-base percentage (.324). Braves have generated more run production from behind the plate than any team in MLB. Atlanta catchers are hitting .273 with 19 HR, 62 RBI and an .842 OPS. (This does not include Gattis/McCann production at other positions, pinch hitting or DH.). If you include DH and pinch-hit AB’s by McCann/Gattis/Laird, Braves catchers have 26 HR, 79 RBI right now, just a little more than half-way through the season. Through 833 combined at-bats, the trio of BJ Upton, Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward are hitting exactly .200 for the season. Despite hitting .200 through the first half, Dan Uggla’s 18 HR ranks first among NL second-baseman and 3 homeruns behind Robinson Cano for the MLB homer lead at 2B. Uggla is on pace to hit 31 HR this season with 198 strikeouts. The Upton brothers will surpass Adrian and Edgar Gonzalez for the most strikeouts in a season by two brothers in baseball history. The Gonzalez brothers had 218 in 2008 with the San Diego Padres; the Uptons currently have 202.
