In 2003, the Chicago Cubs drafted center fielder Ryan Harvey with the No. 6 pick in the MLB Draft. Like most Cubs first-round picks, he didn’t even come close to the show, topping off with two and a half years in Double-A before leaving organized baseball in 2010 and attempting to resurface as a pitcher.

And somehow he isn’t even the most disappointing Cub taken in the Top 10 that year.

No. 8 overall pick Paul Maholm (Pirates) and No. 10 pick Ian Stewart (Rockies) have joined the club this season and have brought even more awfulness to the Cubs Class of ’03 legacy.

Stewart, now the starting third baseman, is hitting .233 with an OPS of .685. While both of those numbers suck, they are sadly rather respectable for this **** squad. The Cubs are hitting .233 as a team with a OPS of .623, 26th in the big leagues.

Stewart looks like the NL MVP in comparison to Maholm. The uncrafty lefty is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA in two starts.

The Cubs actually did get a productive player out of the ’03 draft, picking Sean Marshall in the sixth round. Marshall, also known as the only good player in the bullpen before he was sent to the Reds in the offseason, has two saves and a 2.08 ERA for Cincinnati right now.

Though Marshall was very good as a Cub, he is far from being the best sixth-rounder taken in ’03. That distinction would go to Matt Kemp out of Midwest City (Okla.) High School — you know, the guy who actually does look like the NL MVP for the Dodgers.

Clearly Kemp should thank his lucky stars he didn’t end up a Cub, or you probably would have never heard of him.
