To say I was not a fan of the Vlad Guerrero signing is probably an understatement. It was pretty bad at the time, and actually managed to turn out even worse than I had expected (but he had a track-record!): Projected Actual PA 550 590 BA .291 .290 OBP .336 .317 SLG .467 .416 wOBA .346 .318 BB% 5% 3% K% 12% 9% HR 22 13 BABIP .300 .302 Defense N/A N/A WAR 1.1 0.0 Vlad didn't draw a walk until May 3rd, which was awful but amazingly not even the longest streak to start the season (Chicago's Brent Morel went till the 29th - 117 PA to Guerrero's 115*). The lack of walks wasn't too surprising given his reputation, and Vlad did stay true to form by swinging at pitches out of the strike-zone more often than anyone in baseball (according to FanGraphs). The best part of it all (or worst, depending on perspective), is that for the first time in his career he actually had more double pl...

What Happened To Nick Markakis?

Nick Markakis was looking like one of the best young players in baseball after the 2008 season, hitting 306/406/491 and racking up 6.3 WAR. He could do it all – hit for average, power, and play outstanding defence. The O’s wisely locked him up to a long term deal, paying him 66 million for 6 seasons. Markakis looked like a cornerstone outfielder, capable of leading the...

Baltimore Orioles: The return of the cartoon bird

The Baltimore Orioles might not necessarily have the greatest record in the world over the past decade plus. However at least now they’ll look better win or lose. Changes to the Orioles’ uniforms were unveiled yesterday 8on orioles.com, and speaking for myself I think they look great. In effect there’s no change to the traditional home uniform, which will remain white with...

Continuing with the retro-themed offseason the Orioles started with the reintroduction of the cartoon bird, news has leaked that the team plans to erect six statues in the picnic area above the left-center field bullpen. The New Uniform Changes: Back to the Future?

Yesterday morning, the Baltimore Orioles unveiled their talked about uniform changes to the public. Overall, I like what they have done and all the jerseys include an additional patch celebrating the 20th birthday of Camden Yards. Plus, some the changes harks back to some nostalgia -- which is badly needed considering the state of the team right now. The uniform changes were ...

Baltimore Orioles to Revive the Cartoon Bird.

While the Baltimore Orioles have been one of the most atrocious teams in baseball for the past decade, they are finally making a splash that is newsworthy. The Orioles have decided to bring back their legendary cartoon bird logo and the halloween-esque orange jerseys that made them famous. At least the Orioles are attempting to embrace the cartoon imagery that is placed upon...

Orioles Sign Matt Antonelli

The Orioles have signed Matt Antonelli to a Major League contract, pending a physical.  Antonelli was taken 17th overall by the Padres in the 2006 draft and has 65 Major League plate appearances to his name, all in 2008 with San Diego.  The 26-year-old posted an .847 OPS in the Nationals' system last year, playing almost all his games with Triple-A Syracuse.  Antonelli was...
