Expectations for Aubrey Huff entering this season were reasonably low. He would be in his mid-30s, and a healthy dose of regression was inevitable, coming off of his incredible 2010 season. Out of nowhere, he had managed to hit .290/.385/.506 (.388 wOBA, 143 wRC+) on a measly one-year $3MM deal; he had posted the best walk rate of his career (12.4%) by far, and had even managed to steal seven bases without being caught at all. What’s more, he’d held his own defensively in the outfield — a position he hadn’t played since 2006 — after being asked to move there on short notice. He was, of sorts, the emblem of the Giants’ 2010 championship story, rally thong and all: a cheap one-year signing that had instantly revived his career with an all-star caliber season. On November 23rd, the Giants rewarded him with a two-year $22MM contract; I’ve thought about this one a lot, and revisited it a while back. Conclusion: it was perfectly justifiable: On No...

SF Giants Rumors: Who’s The Giants 2012 Starting Outfield?

Who’s the San Francisco Giants 2012 starting outfield? Your guess is as good as mine! With the potential departure of the Giants best hitting outfielder Carlos Beltran (Giants need to re-sign him), who’s left?   Cody Ross, Pat Burrell and Beltran are free agents. That leaves outfielders Justin Christian, Francisco Peguero, Darren Ford, Nate Schierholtz and Andres Torres...

They also have the league-low runs scored (54) as well.   Brandon Crawford has played in 6 games thus far, and leads the team...

Sergio Romo? More Like: Strikeouts Relievo

A pitcher even finer than even these two upstanding gents! Quick! There’s no time to waste! Name the five best FIP- seasons in the history of MLB. (Minimum, a scant 20 IP.) I’d imagine your list includes Eric Gagne‘s crazy 2003 and Pedro Martinez‘s nutso 1999 season. And you’d be correct. But there’s another modern-day pitcher you’d have...

B-Weez bails out of golf tourney

Just saw this over at CSN Bay Area: According to Mychael Urban, Giants closer Brian Wilson has withdrawn from participating in the 40th Annual Children’s Miracle Network Pro-Am in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. There’s been no official word from B-Weez, who participated in the annual tournament back in 2001, or the PGA Tour on why he disappeared faster than a black ops chalupa...

(All entries courtesy nationalpastime.com) 1974: Two very well-known outfielders are traded for one another as the Giants send Bobby Bonds to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer. Considered to be the biggest one-for-one trade in baseball history, the swap of “the next Willie Mays” (Bonds) for “the next Mickey Mantle” (Murcer) marks the first time two $600,000 players...

(All entries courtesy nationalpastime.com) 2002: Twenty-year old Venezuelan right-hander Francisco Rodriguez becomes the youngest pitcher ever to win a World Series game. With just 15 days of major league experience, K-Rod throws 37 pitches, retiring nine consecutive batters in three innings to pick up the victory when the Angels outslug the Giants, 11-10 in Game 2 of the Fall Classic.

Emmanuel Burriss Appears in African-American MLB Vid

The Washington Times put together an interesting video based on a disturbing premise -- the declining percentage of African-Americans on Major League Baseball teams. And Emmanuel Burriss, Giants second baseman and D.C. resident, has an appearance. As the video notes, African-Americans only comprise 8.5 percent of MLB rosters, as opposed to 17 percent on Opening Day of 1997, "...

Jeremy Affeldt Hamburger Injury Healing Well

Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt is scheduled to make a visit to the Bay Area this week to get his injured hand checked out. You may remember that Affeldt missed the final weeks of the season after he cut his hand open while trying to separate frozen hamburgers with a knife during a rare off day. The cut was deep enough to cause nerve damage and required surgery. AP reported that...

Giants' Affeldt healing from scary injury to hand

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt is healing well from a season-ending hand injury sustained when he seriously cut himself trying to separate frozen hamburgers.

How 2010's Lincecum-Lee Game Ranks

Interesting question: where does the performance of two aces -- Tim Lincecum and Cliff Lee -- in Game 1 rank in terms of the best World Series openers of the last 20 years? And yeah, you're damn right we're going to keep reminiscing about the 2010 World Series! (What you prefer with free agency closed and teams other than the Giants playing?) Big League Stew's Kevin Kaduk...
