San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson is headed for a second opinion on his right elbow from Dr. James Andrews before deciding whether or not to have Tommy John surgery. Regardless if he has the surgery or not, he is going to be out quite awhile and manager Bruce Bochy has been talking up the dreaded closer-by-committee in place of Wilson. For now, Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo are the two favorites for saves with Clay Hensley and Javier Lopez picking up the occasional save.

If I owned closer Heath Bell of the Miami Marlins, I would be getting a little concerned and would be looking for another closer just in case. Bell is 0-for-2 in save chances this season with eight hits allowed and three walks in three innings. He took a big hit in his strikeout rate last season as it fell from 11.1 to 7.3 per nine innings and it is at 6 through three innings in 2012. A drop in velocity in his fastball from 94 to 92.9 this season could be part of the problem and he could be possibly hiding an injury as well given the way he has been hit. Edward Mujica or Steve Cishek would get the first shot at saves if Bell had to miss any action.

Bryan Shaw picked up his second save of the season for the Arizona Diamondbacks as manager Kirk Gibson allowed him to close out a game after coming into the game in the 8th inning. Shaw so far has been pitching better than he ever did in the minor leagues with with six scoreless innings of work, eight strikeouts and no walks allowed. As long as J.J. Putz is healthy Shaw is only going to see a couple of save chances the rest of the season, so if you own him in a NL-only league, now is the time to sell high as his value will never be higher.

Tyler Chatwood picked up a save for the Colorado Rockies last week but don’t go rushing out to the waiver wire to pick him up. The save was of the three inning variety and he is a long man in the bullpen and not someone to consider as a closer if Rafael Betancourt ever had to miss any time.
