The Los Angeles Angles look like they have two capable options to close out games now as Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri each picked up two saves last week. Downs is still unscored upon in 16 innings this season and has a 0.88 WHIP while Frieri has 11 scoreless innings since coming over to the National League with 23 strikeouts. Frieri has the better arm, as shown with no hits allowed since coming to the Angels, but with a lefty (Downs) and righty (Frieri) option, manager Mike Scioscia can alternate closers depending who is coming up in the ninth inning.

Seattle Mariner’s closer Brandon League was removed from the closer last week after blowing two saves within an eight day period and allowing seven runs in his last 3 1/3 innings of work. While the team has not announced who will replace League in the ninth inning, there are several different options to pick from.

  1. Tom Wihelmsen: has seven holds along with a 4.44 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings. Has not been very good in May with a 7.88 ERA and 1.75 WHIP with seven runs allowed in eight innings.
  2. Shawn Kelley: currently has a 3.60 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 10 strikeouts in 10 innings of work. He has yet to record a save in his major league career in 83 appearances.
  3. Lucas Luetge: situational lefty that has worked 11 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts. Still has some work to do on his control with seven walks allowed.

Tyler Clippard has taken over as the closer for the Washington Nationals and he racked up three saves last week. For the season, Clippard now has a 2.91 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 27 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings of action. Sean Burnett may see a save or two if there are several left-handed hitters up in the ninth inning, but Clippard is the guy to own for now while Drew Storen remains out of action.

Closer Watch List:

Mark Melancon of the Boston Red Sox has gone down to Triple-A and done his job, collecting eight saves while posting a 0.53 ERA. In 17 innings, he has walked three and struck out 24. While Alfredo Aceves has been getting the job done at the major league level despite blowing a save yesterday, Melancon is a good handcuff to grab for when he gets called up.

American League Saves last week:

Rafael Soriano – 3
Chris Perez – 2
Fernando Rodney – 2
Scott Downs – 2
Jose Valverde – 2

National League Saves last week:

Frank Francisco– 3
Tyler Clippard – 3
Joel Hanrahan – 2
Brett Myers – 2
Santiago Casilla – 2
