Found April 05, 2012 on Reds Minor Leagues:
The Minor League season gets started this evening, so what better time to have a season preview than opening day? Louisville Bats The Bats official roster hasn’t been released yet and isn’t scheduled to be out until some point today. But, we do know the key figures who will be there. This team, unlike the past 3 years or so, will be very veteran heavy with only a few prospects sprinkled in. Of the position players, only Neftali Soto will play the season as a guy who will be younger than 25-years-old (he will be 23 this season). On the pitching side, relievers Nick Christiani and JJ Hoover will be 24-years-old. This will be one of the older teams in Louisville, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a chance to be a good team. There are some interesting arms on the pitching staff and several guys on the 40-man roster who will be starting position players. The starting rotation will include Jeff Francis, who will start tonight. However the other starters have not been announced, but I...

Chapman shines as relief pitcher in Reds' win

CINCINNATI There are those in Cincinnati Reds country who howled, kicked and screamed when they heard that Aroldis Chapman was plopped into the bullpen for the start of the 2012 season. They argue that the team paid 30 milllion U.S. for the Cuban-born lefthander and 30 milllion U.S. should be the salary of a starter, not a bullpen guy who may or may not pitch on a given day or...

McCoy: Just call him Pal Joey

If you are a Cincinnati Reds fan, just call him Pal Joey, because Joey Votto is going to be your friendly first baseman for the next 12 years. His 10-year contract extension, tacked on to the two years for which he is already signed, puts him in a Reds uniform through 2023. That's a long, long time, even in dog years, and when the contract expires he will be 40 years old. ...

Donald Lutz hit a 2 run home run in the 4th inning off of Mike Leake to take care of the scoring for the Futures team. Here is the Box Score for the game from the Futures team (Lohman and Waldrop actually suited up for the Reds team later in the game in order to get...

Most memorable opening days in Reds history

There's nothing quite like Opening Day in Cincinnati. The pageantry, the tradition, the promise that only a new season can bring; it all adds up to one of the most anticipated days of the year for the Queen City. The city has been lucky enough to celebrate many of them since the team was established in 1869. And in honor of yet another one tomorrow, I thought it'd be...

Cueto dominates Marlins in Reds' opener

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jay Bruce homered and drove in a pair of runs, and Johnny Cueto dominated in his first opening-day start, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday before one of their biggest crowds. Cueto (1-0) anchored the Reds' first opening-day shutout since 1980, when Frank Pastore beat Atlanta's Phil Niekro 9-0. The right-hander...

Opening Day: Cincinnati's greatest holiday

by: Josh Bethel Staff Writer When people talk about baseball, they talk fondly about history. Hell, baseball is a game who's foundation relies on history more than any other sport. Football today barely resembles the same game it did even 60 years ago and people seem to forget that the three point line didn't exist until 1979. Meanwhile, baseball has hardly changed...

Is A Phillips contract extension imminent?

The Reds front office continues to be both aggressive and bold in their approach to the team's future. After inking All-Star first basemen Joey Votto to a massive 10yr/$225MM extension on Wednesday, rumors are swirling that a potential contract extension with Brandon Phillips could be reached by as soon as week's end. Here's an excerpt regarding the situation...

ESPN 'experts' predict 2012 season

By a show of hands, how many of you predicted the Cardinals' epic World Series run last season? Or that the Reds would follow a division title campaign with a losing record in the next? There shouldn't be a whole lot of hands in the air at this moment. The point is it's hard to predict the future. But despite of this, ESPN's team of "experts" attempted...

Buehrle ready to make debut against Cincinnati

Tune into FOX Sports Florida or Sun Sports at 3:30 p.m. to watch the Miami Marlins take on the Cincinnati Reds. While opening day is normally a tough ticket, Cincinnati Reds fans who miss out Thursday still have plenty of time to see Joey Votto in the future. Votto will play for the first time since signing the longest guaranteed contract in major league history when the Reds...

It's Cozart's Turn

For a franchise known for stability at shortstop with Dave Concepcion and Barry Larkin, it’s been anything but that in Cincinnati since the latter’s retirement in 2004. Paul Janish beginning his season in Louisville means the Reds will start their seventh different shortstop in the last eight openers. Rookie Zach Cozart looks begin a new trend when the Reds open tonight.
