Things are settling in nicely here at the Closer Report. We’re starting to get some clarity on jobs as manager’s back new closers and incumbents pitch and solidify their status. Detroit Tigers Papa Grande is back! Jose Valverde has retaken the closer role for the Detroit Tigers and I like it. You’ll hear experts like ESPN’s Matthew Berry say “I’m not really buying Valverde. It’s literally like, let’s try this. They didn’t want him back. He was ineffective in the playoffs…” Wait? They didn’t want him back? Says who? Certainly not Jim Leyland. Read this….I’ll wait. This piece is from February 2013 from ESPN. I guess the TMR doesn’t read his own site. Now, I’m sure the Tigers didn’t want him back for the $9M per year he made in 2012. Anibal Sanchez sets Detroit Tigers franchise record with 17 strikeouts

Anibal Sanchez is probably the third or fourth Tigers pitcher you'd name if told a member of this year's staff broke the Detroit Tigers franchise record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game. But Sanchez is the dude who did it, fanning 17 Braves batters faced during Friday night's 10-0 Tigers win. Strikeout No. 17, and the ensuing celebration (x4), is embedded below...

Sanchez's effort conjures up memories of Lolich

Forty-four years ago, Price sat in the dugout and bullpen at Tiger Stadium while Kaline played in the two games in which Mickey Lolich set the club record of 16 strikeouts in 1969....

Three Cuts: Sanchez-led Tigers blank Braves

Here are three things we learned from the Tigers' 10-0 rout of the visiting Braves on Friday night, a one-sided result that didn't really live up to the World Series Preview hype: 1. The Braves ran into an Anibal Sanchez buzzsaw, plain and simple Sanchez, the ex-Marlin who signed with the Tigers after flourishing with Detroit during August, September and October last year...

Victor Martinez Pulled A Grandpa Simpson

Your browser does not support iframes.Kansas City’s Jeff Francoeur has a strong arm in right. Detroit’s Victor Martinez is not fast. Dude’s 34 years old, you know? He wasn’t fast a decade ago. But here he is being waved home, kicking up dirt behind the also-not-fast Prince Fielder, en route to a home plate collision. What’s a guy to do in a situation like this? Plow...

Tigers' bats too much for Braves

Omar Infante and Jhonny Peralta both hit two-run homers, and Rick Porcello bounced back from a nightmarish start last weekend to pitch into the seventh inning, helping the Detroit Tigers to a 7-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Infante's homer off Kris Medlen (1-3) broke a 3-all tie in the fourth. Porcello (1-2) allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings. He didn't make...

Dugout Digest - the whiff king

Anibal Sanchez set the Tigers franchise record for strikeouts in a game on Friday night, fanning 17 Braves and getting 28 whiffs on the evening (good for a 23.1% whiff rate). Considering that Detroit currently features strikeout artists like Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Mickey Lolich, that somehow makes Sanchez's accomplishment that much more awesome in context.
