So far on the countdown, the only team that I was down on that some have disagreed with is the Milwaukee Brewers. The pitching is going to be a concern and I do see them taking a major step back this season. Really, from here forward, most teams are more evenly matched. However, I have the Diamondbacks next on my list, ranking them #23 on the 30-1 MLB countdown previews. Arizona finished in 3rd place in the NL West last season, going 81-81. This was just 1 year off a NL West title and 94-68 record under manager Kirk Gibson. The 2012 decline mirrored the decline of star RF Justin Upton, who hit .289, 31, 88 in 2011 and .280, 17, 67 in 2012. He saw his 2Bs decrease from 39 to 24 and his SLG % from .529 to .430. That and character flaws led to his trade to the Atlanta Braves. Top RHP pitching prospect Trevor Bauer was traded because of similar character issues to the Indians in a deal that brought SS Didi Gregorius from Cincinnati Reds. The strength of this team will be their ...

Rod Barajas found missing World Series ring in wife’s shoe … four years later

The story of Rod Barajas’ missing World Series ring has a happy ending. Barajas, 37, saw his first regular action as a big leaguer with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001 — the year the team beat the New York Yankees in the World Series. Even though he only batted .160 in 51 games as a backup catcher that season, Barajas went 2-for-5 with a home run in the thrilling seven-game...

D-backs see relaxed Skaggs hitting his stride

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- When Diamondbacks rookie left-hander Tyler Skaggs took the mound for his third start of spring training, it was evident pretty quickly something was different. He was more in command and more himself. After a chat with manager Kirk Gibson, Skaggs has relaxed and begun focusing less on winning the fifth spot in the starting rotation, and in doing so, he has begun...

D-backs rookies show their spirit -- literally

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Diamondbacks rookies put on quite a spirited performance for teammates Saturday morning -- with an assist from some local high schoolers. Diamondbacks Wade Miley leaves earlier than expected, giving some a scare

He wasn't actually injured.  That's the good news for Arizona Diamondbacks fans.  However, there was a brief period of fear and confusion as Wade Miley exited his spring game yesterday a full inning earlier than he was scheduled to. Nick Piercoro of the Arizona Republic pointed it out on Twitter: Expected #Dbacks LHP Wade Miley to go three innings but he's out...

D-backs' day, Delgado's outing cut short by rain

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Mother Nature played the hidden ball trick on the Diamondbacks on Friday. The rain and gusty wind conditions were particularly hard on D-backs catcher Wil Nieves. "I felt like a goalie, Nieves said. "I just saw shapes coming at me. Catching, I knew what was coming, so that was OK. But hitting, I couldnt really see it. You couldnt pick up the spin."...

Putz back in form at back of D-backs' bullpen

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. After suffering through a death-by-inches existence for the first seven weeks of 2012, Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz turned lethal. Closers Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman were among the top eight finishers for the NL Cy Young award, and had Putz found his mechanics earlier, he might have joined them. When Putz got back to his normal delivery in late May, he...

Calling All Short Stops

During the off season, Arizona Diamondbacks fans certainly had their hearts toyed with from the whirlwind of trade talk that constantly surrounded one of their favorite players. While some of the fans prepared for Justin Upton’s inevitable trade, others held out hope that the outfielder would once again wear sedona red in 2013. When the deal was done and Upton was sent to play...

Brewers 4, Diamondbacks 3

Khris Davis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, his third straight game with a homer, and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Thursday. Eric Chavez gave Arizona a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-out home run just to the right of the batters' eye in center field, his first of the spring. Milwaukee tied it at 2 in the...
