McEffect Hopeful
The Pirates dropped their eighth game of the spring to the Twins 4-2 at McKechnie Field. However, strong performances from newcomers Erik Bedard, Casey McGehee, and Rod Barajas made the afternoon a success.
Bedard, who looked good locating the fastball, went three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. With the relaxed atmosphere in spring training, ROOT Sports got interviews with many players and even Clint Hurdle during the game. Bedard, like every other player interviewed, said he felt good and that the spring is a process. He also said he likes the young talent on the team.
Bedard was helped out by two fine plays by McGehee, who was at third today after spending time at first during the spring. McGehee had a big day at the plate going 3-3 including two doubles and a RBI. In his interview with ROOT, McGehee said that he still has some things to work on at first and that it is a learning process.
Barajas added a double to raise his spring average to .455. Hanrahan entered the game in the fourth and pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Jo-Jo Reyes entered the game in the fifth and was touched up throughout his three innings of work for five hits, four runs (all earned), and gave up a three run homer to Danny Valencia to put the Twins up for good.
Jason Grilli and Juan Cruz, who is fighting for a bullpen spot, each pitched scoreless innings.
The Pirates head to Port Charlotte tomorrow to face the Rays. Joining them will be Neil Walker, who will be returning from a back injury that has slowed him down this week. Also A.J. Burnett is back in camp and said that he could return before the 8-12 week time table he was put on for the broken orbital bone.

Weekend Notes: Burnett, Walker, Marte
A.J. Burnett is back in Bradenton and has started his rehab process after fouling a ball into his eye during a bunting drill. He played catch today for about 50 throws. The timeframe of 8-12 weeks still seems likely, which would put his return to the rotation sometime in May.
Neil Walker is cleared to play and will start at second base tomorrow. Walker had been sidelined with a back...
Erik Bedard look good today (and other stray observations
This is a little late, but here are my observations from this afternoon's Pirates/Twins broadcast:
As everyone's already said, Erik Bedard looked quite good. He seemed to be locating the ball well and he was changing speeds nicely. The stat line was great, but that's not really all that important early in the spring.Â
Casey McGehee absolutely pounded a couple of...

Trade With Juuust a bit outside: My First Andrew McCutchen Autograph.
I completed my first trade with Kyle of Juuust a bit outside. Kyle was in need of some Trifecta assistance, and posted some bait. A certain young centerfielder's autograph appealed to me, and we had ourselves a trade. My first signature of the Pirates' stud centerfielder, who was just rewarded for his stellar play and significant upside with a long-term deal. Presley and Bucs outfield back to the future
With Andrew McCutchen's six-year, $51.5 million extension out of the way, it was signed March 6, the Pirates can reasonably take a look far down the road at what looks like the franchise's most dynamic outfield since Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla.

Casey McGehee went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and an RBI [video of 2nd double]. McGehee was 1 for 8 going into today’s game, so this is a good thing to see.

Starling Marte will get here when he gets here
The Pirates’ Grapefruit League schedule isn’t even a week old yet but yinzers are already sp geeked up about what Starling Marte has been doing that they think the Buccos should keep him in the Big Leagues to start the regular season.
Starling is the Pirates’ top fielding prospect, and third overall behind pitchers Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole, and he’s been playing...
Niemann and Correia sharp for Rays and Pirates
Jeff Niemann and Kevin Correia each breezed through three innings in their second spring training starts Sunday, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 Sunday.
Niemann was perfect for the Rays, throwing 20 of his 27 pitches for strikes. He is contending for the fifth spot in Tampa Bay's rotation.
Correia gave up two hit and walked one for Pittsburgh. The 31...

A friendly reminder
The Pirates and Twins play at McKechnie at 1:05 this afternoon and the game will be televised both on MLB.tv and ROOT Sports Pittsburgh. Erik Bedard is pitching for the Bucs, so it should be a chance for everyone to get a look at him. If I get a chance to watch any of the game, I'll try to type up some observations similar to what I did for the Orioles' game from earlier in the week.
