Ryan MacLeod Contributing Writer The Red Sox made the most of the San Diego Padres trip to Boston, sweeping them and increasing their lead in the AL East. The team is now 53-34 and 31-16 at home. Here are the 3 stars of the game. Game 86: Star 3: Edinson Volquez Volquez pitched fantastically for the Padres giving his team 6 strong innings of work. He allowed only 7 hits in that span but more importantly held the Red Sox offense to only 1 run. He walked 1 and struck out 6 in his outing. Star 2: Jon Lester Lester dominated in the pitchers duel, continuing to improve on the year. He pitched 7 innings giving up 6 hits and allowing only 1 run. He struck out 5 and walked 1. His performance brought his ERA down to 4.41 but again got a no decision. Star 1: Jonny Gomes Gomes only saw 5 pitches in his one at bat, but it was the last pitch that was the only one he needed to see. He came in to pinch hit for Snyder in the bottom of the 9th inning in a tied ball game and ended the game with a w...

The two-run shot was the fifth pinch-hit HR of the DH's career (the first with Boston was also against the Angels in 2003). Felix Doubront had yet another good start—albeit with some rough...

Happy Independence Day: Let’s Celebrate Vinny Castilla

The San Diego Padres have had only one player in franchise history born on the 4th of July: third baseman, Vinny Castilla. On Independence Day*, America’s birthday, Vinny Castilla was born into this world. In Oaxaca, Mexico As San Diego contended for a division title throughout the summer of 2006, Vinny Castilla struggled mightily during his 72 game stint as a Padre. On July 17th...

Red Sox' Stephen Drew pushed back to Saturday

The Boston Red Sox were hoping to have shortstop Stephen Drew back in the lineup on Friday, but it appears now that Saturday is more likely. MLB.com's Michael Periatt reports that Drew will sit out again on Friday due to tightness in his right hamstring but could play on Saturday at the Los Angeles Angels. Drew exited the game on June 28 early and has not played since. So...

The Red Sox will be wearing white Stars and Stripes caps for their afternoon game against the Padres on Thursday. Tributes are also in line at Fenway Park. While a full view of the new headwear will be available in just a couple of hours as the Sox take the field,...

Webster reacts to first big league win

The Guru Contributing Writer It took five starts, but Red Sox rookie pitcher Allen Webster finally earned his first major league win as Boston downed the Padres 8-2. Webster, one of the players acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in last year’s blockbuster deal that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to LA said, “It’s a huge relief, just a...

Angels May Need Extra Help on Mound to Fend Off Red-Hot Red Sox (Video)

It’s no secret that the Red Sox are hot right now. They own the best record in the American League and the second best in MLB with 54 wins. That’s why the Angels’ pitching choice for Saturday night’s late-night matchup is so interesting — the west coast team could be setting themselves up for failure. NESN Nation’s Alison Smith breaks down why that is in the above video...

Recap: Sox hit everything, sweep Padres

(AP Photo/Winslow Townson) It was another one of those "everyone hits" game, as 8 starting Sox' batters recorded two or more hits in the 8-2 victory over the Padres. The only one to record only one hit was Brandon Snyder, though it was a solo homer for his first of the season. So, we can excuse him for getting only one hit. It will take all afternoon to breakdown...

Red Sox Clay Buccholz feels like he's 'turned a corner'

After uncertainty surrounding Clay Buccholz's recovery and estimated timetable for return, clarity may be coming.  Buccholz, who is recovering from right shoulder bursitis, has had trouble getting over the rehab hump, but now he is feeling better.  Buccholz may be returning after just one rehab start. Evan Drelich of MassLive.com says Buccholz threw from 100 feet on flat...

Your Morning Dump...where Gomes is more than a clubhouse guy

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Jonny Gomes gets a lot of praise for being a "good clubhouse guy." But after Wednesday night's pinch-hit walk-off home run at Fenway Park in a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres, Gomes should probably...

The Guru Contributing Writer The American League and National League All-Star teams have been announced. The starters were selected by fan votes. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia will be...

Preparing for sleep deprivation

I hate Red Sox West Coast road trips. Like, I really, seriously LOATHE West Coast road trips. I’m one of those people who’s really finicky about my sleep schedule, to the point that I’ll ditch my friends to go home and sleep. But as you all know by now, I’m also extremely serious about the Red Sox, and I’m willing to sacrifice a consistent sleep schedule for a few days...

Red Sox Look to Continue Momentum From Impressive Homestand, Slow Down Surging Angels

After their most successful homestand in more than three years, the Boston Red Sox will begin a 1o-game West Coast road trip on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Felix Doubront will get the nod in the series opener, and he will need to have his best stuff in order to slow down an Angels team that has won eight of its last nine games. The Sox are coming off a hot streak of their...

Sox top Padres

I missed the first eight and a half innings of tonight’s game because I was in class: graduate school started yesterday and we’ve hit the ground running. Of course, I surreptitiously monitored the progress of the Red Sox as consistently as possible, and was thrilled every time I checked in by the excellent start from John Lackey. You can’t script it any better than this: the...
