With their offense more off than on for the past month or more the usually bunt-averse A's went small-ball in the first inning Saturday. Back-to-back bunts got Oakland on the move the A's scored three runs in the inning and they tacked on a run with a safety squeeze in the seventh to beat Texas 4-2 at the Coliseum. The A's ended their three-game losing streak and pushed their lead in the AL West back to 3 1/2 games. "It's definitely a tool we can use when we need it" said A's second baseman Eric Sogard who had two of the bunts including the squeeze. "Sometimes off a good pitcher when he's rolling - early on to create some havoc or later to score one run - sometimes it's the right thing to do" manager Bob Melvin said of all the bunting. Coco Crisp led off the first with a nice bunt toward third for a base hit and Sogard advanced him with a sacrifice. Jed Lowrie sent in Crisp with a base hit then Yoenis Céspedes clobbered a home run to left-center. In his first start against Oakland since being traded to Texas Matt Garza had thrown six pitches and allowed three runs. The A's fourth run also came via bunts - Alberto Callaspo walked to open the seventh inning Stephen Vogt moved him to second with a sacrifice and Crisp singled to right putting Callaspo at third. Then Sogard put down a safety squeeze along the first-base line allowing Callaspo to sprint home from third. Garza looked incensed yelling what appeared to be profane insults toward Sogard.
