The trade deadline is a little more than a month away and we are starting to hear rumors out there of players who the Cardinals could be interested in. First it was Cliff Lee and then it was Jonathan Papelbon. These rumors will only pick up as we get closer to the deadline. I thought I would look at 5 players who could have trade value for the Cardinals and who are players the Cardinals could deal. 1. Matt Adams: I know the team has said several times that they are not interested in dealing Adams, but who knows what offer could pop up within the month? I believe that Adams’ worth is much higher to other teams than it is in St. Louis. What is Adams’ future role in St. Louis? It looks like it will be really hard not to bring back Carlos Beltran and Oscar Taveras should be ready next year, so that leaves Adams where he is this year, the bench. It would make sense for the Cards to move him while his stock is still relatively high to other teams. 2. Carlos Martinez/Michael Wacha: First, let me say that I do not want the Cards to deal either of these two.  I hate to throw these names out there, but if the Cardinals do go after a Cliff Lee, one of these will have to be involved. Personally, I don’t think the Cards should make that move, but this is what it would take. In the Twitterverse, we see amateur GM’s (like myself) throw out trade scenarios to get an all-star like Lee. What people do not understand is Wacha or Martinez will have to be involved to make that deal. Mitchell Boggs, Kolten Wong, and Marc Rzepczynski will not get it done. 3. Breyvic Valera: The Cardinals second base situation has been greatly stabilized by the all-star play of Matt Carpenter. With Kolten Wong waiting in the wings, Valera becomes expendable to me. He, alone, won’t net the Cardinals an all-star, or even a starter, but could add a valuable piece to a playoff run. So, why not Wong instead of Valera? Wong is major league ready now and I don’t think the Cards would give that up, even thought they could get a higher return. Valera is young and can hit and get on base, plus he is versitile in the field. All things teams would like to see. 4. Tyrell Jenkins: Jenkins name came up a few times down the stretch in 2012, and I am sure it will come up again this year. Jenkins is easily a top 10 prospect, but I don’t think you could get what you want in return by trading Jenkins. With all the pitching depth above him, Jenkins becomes expendable. Jenkins has had an up-and-down 2013. He ha struggled at times and excelled at times, even posting a 9 inning complete game shutout, which is tough to do that low in the minors. Currently, Jenkins is on the disabled list, which zaps an trade value he may have had. 5. Seth Maness: This is a tough one for me, because I love the role that he plays in the bullpen. I feel like other teams, who need starting pitching help, could come calling about Maness. I think his value is as high as it ever has been, and what is the saying? Buy low and sell high. I can’t envision a scenario where Maness works his way into the starting rotation, so will he be a bullpen guy for the rest of his career? Maness, alone,  won’t land you the top of the line player, but could be part of a package that could. I would hate to see every one of these guys go, and I don’t necessarily think the Cardinals are in desperation mode to make a move. A part from Adams and the Martinez/Wacha combo, none of these other guys will net the Cardinals a top player alone, but they could be pieces in a deal that adds more depth or replaces a sudden injury. We just never know what will happen from now til July 31st.     Related articles St. Louis Cardinals: Seth Maness is re-defining efficiency St. Louis Cardinals: DAniel Descalso’s days in St. Louis should be numbered St. Louis Cardinals send Carlos Martinez to Memphis, recall Victor Marte
