Pittsburgh Pirates: Contenders or Pretenders?

My preseason prediction to snag one of the two NL Wild Card spots, the Pittsburgh Pirates, are off to a pretty impressive start. After giving their fans something to get excited about for the first time in a while in 2011, it seems that the Bucs may have figured out how to sustain that success more this year than last year. Off to a 34-31 start, the Pirates are in 2nd place in the...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Lost the battle of the scrap heap

Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug (Opening image Mark Reynolds, credit xosports) Last week’s unfortunate 3-game sweep at the hands of the equally upstart Baltimore Orioles called to mind 2 things for me: 1. I long for a true geographic MLB realignment some... This is a content summary only. Visit isportsweb.com for full links, other content, and more!

Waiver Wire: Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Pittsburgh Pirates

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m telling you to pick up Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez. Call me crazy, but the way he’s playing now makes me hope he can be of benefit to your fantasy team. Plus, if you’re currently a cellar dweller, what do you have to lose? Alvarez got off to a very slow start this season, but, unusually, has gotten out of his slump. He...

Correia wins at home, bats stay hot

The Pirates got off to an excellent start to this week’s homestand, pounding the Twins by a 7-2 score. Even better, they did it with their worst starter on the mound against Minnesota’s best. Kevin Correia did a very nice job, picking up his first home win in a year. His last one was June 22, 2011 against Baltimore, and all three of his Pirates wins at PNC Park have been against...

Taking care of business…in style

The Pirates did what they were supposed to do, cruising behind their ace to a big win over a bad Twins team. They did so in extremely impressive fashion, however, and won their second straight series (and seventh out of eight). The victory gets the Bucs back to three over .500, within two of the division, and within one of the wild card. James McDonald was phenomenal yet again. Remember...

Big week for the “Big 3″ pitching prospects

While the Pirates played well this week in a series win over the Twins, there was more good news in the organization down on the farm. The system’s top three pitching prospects (not including the still-unsigned Mark Appel) all pitched very well–two of them in debuts at a new level. Last night, Luis Heredia started for short-season State College. Heredia is 17 years old, which...

Pirates 9, Twins 1

James McDonald pitched his first career complete game, Garrett Jones hit one of Pittsburgh's three home runs and the Pirates won for the fourth time in five games, 9-1 over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night. McDonald (6-3) continued his breakthrough season by allowing one run, six hits and no walks with five strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 2.19. He has allowed one run or...

J-Mac goes the distance in 9-1 trouncing of Twins

Final: Pirates 9, Twins 1 WP: James McDonald (6-3, 2.19 ERA) LP: Liam Hendriks (0-4, 7.39 ERA) This game really could not have gone any better. Going into this one, you had to like the Pirates’ chances as you had our ace going up against someone named Liam Hendriks. Hendriks hails from Australia, but his ERA is anything but “down under.” (Terrible attempt at a joke, I know…let’s...

Game 66: Pirates 7 Twins 2

One of the best things about the Pirates thus far in 2012 is that when the play a bad baseball team, they don't mess around with them. The Twins are a pretty bad team this year and the Pirates took advantage of that from the outset of this one. When the Twins tried to fight their way back into it, the Pirates slammed the door shut. This game got off to a weird start when Josh...

Dugout Digest - James McDonald is awesome

I'm not sure if there's a bigger surprise of a player in baseball this year than Pirates starting pitcher James McDonald. After defeating the Twins last night, McDonald's ERA sits at 2.19, with a .195 batting average, 0.95 WHIP, and an 83:24 strikeout to walk ratio in 90 1/3 innings. His ERA is fourth in the National League, his strikeout to walk ratio is 15th...
