Player of the Game Carlos Santana snagged this Player of the Game late with a meaningless two run home run down the left field line. Santana also knocked in the first run of the game for a final Player of the Game score of 5.22. No one else did anything worth mentioning so it was nice of Santana to provide some kind of bright spot. Feathers Up Justin Masterson got the first five hitters to ground out to Jason Kipnis at second and the next batter to ground out to first. Masterson is his best when he is getting ground balls and he was certainly at his best early tonight. When the game was over Masterson had 14 ground outs, two strike outs and one fly out. Milestone Alert: Justin Masterson's first strikeout tonight was career number 456 as an Indian, tying him for 40th all time with Allie Reynolds. Feathers Down Late in the game Jebediah Masterson fell apart as he allowed another home run to Josh Willingham, an earned run in the fifth after allowing a triple and four mor...

Twins say goodbye, prepare to face Liriano

MINNEAPOLIS The inevitable came on Saturday night, just hours after recent Twins call-up Samuel Deduno's seven-inning, two-hit night. It came as the Twins have gained more and more confidence in their young pitchers over recent weeks, but that didn't make it any more of a decision the team wanted to make. It came as the Twins strung together two nights with double-digit...

Twins place Plouffe on DL, recall Valencia

MINNEAPOLIS The Twins placed Trevor Plouffe on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, retroactive to July 21. The third baseman has been suffering from a bruised right thumb and attempted to return for Friday's game before ultimately being placed on the disabled list.To replace Plouffe, the Twins called up Danny Valencia from Triple-A, where he's played since May 9. He'...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Samuel Deduno pitched seven strong innings for his second major league win and Josh Willingham hit his 27th homer of the season, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 12-5 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night. Deduno (2-0) allowed two hits and struck out a career-high six in his fourth big league start. Alexi Casilla drove in four runs for the Twins, who...

Twins trade Liriano to rival White Sox

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins traded pitcher Francisco Liriano to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, acquiring shortstop Eduardo Escobar and left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez, who will both be assigned to Triple-A Rochester. Liriano has played his entire big-league career with the Twins, dating back to 2003 when the team acquired him from the San Francisco Giants. He's...

Duensing takes Liriano's spot vs. Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians continue to fall off pace in the AL Central amid a frustrating series against the Minnesota Twins. On the bright side, they won't have to face Francisco Liriano in the finale of the three-game series Sunday when they try to avoid a sweep. Liriano was scheduled to pitch before the Twins dealt him to Chicago late Saturday night for shortstop Eduardo Escobar...

Can White Sox cure Liriano's inconsistency?

With their playoff chances looking ever brighter and a roster full of young, inexperienced players, the White Sox are up for the challenge. Now, Francisco Liriano must turn their challenge into his opportunity. When the White Sox traded for Liriano on Saturday, they knew they weren't getting a polished starter guaranteed to win them a chunk of games down the stretch. They were...

About time to fork the 2012 Cleveland Indians

After the Cleveland Indians won last week’s series against the Detroit Tigers, not only did Cleveland fans think they could make a run at the A.L. Wildcard. They also thought that they could win the division. While I watched them play I couldn’t help but think, “Maybe this young team has found a way to get it done. Perhaps they have an effective starting pitcher that can throw...

Twins 12, Indians 5

Samuel Deduno pitched seven strong innings for his second major league win and Josh Willingham hit his 27th homer of the season, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 12-5 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night. Indians' bats shut down, swept by Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer, Brian Duensing threw six innings as a late fill-in for Francisco Liriano and the Minnesota Twins finished a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians with a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Duensing (2-6) lost all four of his previous starts this year, but he needed only 70 pitches to finish six frames and yield to the bullpen...

Minnesota Twins trade Francisco Liriano to White Sox

Kenny Williams made another puzzling move when he dealt infielder Eduardo Escobar and left-hander Pedro Hernandez to to the Twins for starter Francisco Liriano. The White Sox have long been questioned for the depth of their farm system and now he has made two deals surrendering five prospects. What’s more, I’m not exactly sure how he has gotten better. Liriano presumably...

Twins GM Ryan still fielding calls from contenders

While watching his team scuffle from the get-go and plummet 17 games under .500, Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan has steadfastly staved off denial. That suits team owner Jim Pohlad, who watched batting practice Friday at Target Field before the Twins' 11-0 rout of the Cleveland Indians. With his team well on its way to consecutive losing seasons for the first time...

Box Score: Twins 12, Indians 5

Justin Masterson cruised through the first three innings then imploded. Masterson gave up two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and then finally was tagged for five runs in the sixth for a total of 10 runs in 5 2/3rds innings. Not that it really mattered. Twins pitcher Samuel Deduno (2-0, 3.13 ERA) held the Tribe to just one run (and two hits) over seven innings to get...

7/27 Game Recap: Indians 0 - Twins 11

Player of the Game Cody Allen pitched the best game of his young career as he threw two innings and only allowed two baserunners. He was even able to get one of those runners out on the bases with a double play as he was the only Indians pitcher to keep the Twins from scoring. His game score of 1.78 gives him an average Player of the Game score of 1.29 for the season, the best...
