Player of the Game Corey Kluber won his first game of the year and his first Player of the Game as well. Kluber threw 6 innings, allowing just 2 runs while striking out four and inducing two double plays. His final score was 4.16. Feathers Up While the Indians were kept from getting extra base hits, they were able to turn a few singles into something more. Jason Kipnis took two extra bases early, scoring on a passed ball, while Shin-Soo Choo, Ezequiel Carerra and Lou Marson all stole second after hitting singles. Choo was even able to take third after the ball flew into centerfield when he stole second. This is the result of a good strategy, coming into the game knowing that Anibal Sanchez does a poor job controlling runners and that Alex Avila is vastly over rated as a defensive catcher. It also shows some agressiveness from the Tribe that has been absent of late. Brent Lillibridge even got an accidental steal in the top of the 9th on a botched hit and run, showing that ...

Garcia impresses in Tigers debut

DETROIT -- All in all, Avisail Garcia's first game in the major leagues was as good as he could have imagined. In his first at-bat, against Chicago White Sox starter Francisco Liriano Saturday night, Garcia fought off pitch after pitch before earning a 10-pitch walk. "I saw the ball good," Garcia said. "He's a good pitcher, but I saw the ball good every pitch...

Indians outlast Tigers once again

DETROIT (AP) -- Justin Masterson pitched six solid innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat Detroit 3-2 on Tuesday night for their second straight victory over the playoff-chasing Tigers. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for Detroit, but the Tigers missed another opportunity against a struggling team. Masterson (11-12) allowed two runs and four hits. He walked one and struck out...

Indians' Kluber earns first major league win

Not much has gone right for the Cleveland Indians in the second half of the season. Most of the hitters have been in slumps, and most of the pitchers have struggled. However, one pitcher who is making the most of a bad situation is rookie right-hander Corey Kluber. Kluber pitched six solid innings Monday against a very good Detroit Tigers lineup to help lead the Indians to a rare...

Will Tigers turn sweep into momentum?

DETROIT Justin Verlander and the Tigers swept the Chicago White Sox out of Comerica Park with an emphatic 4-2 victory Sunday night on national TV, giving them a tie for the Central Division lead. But how much does it really mean at this point? "We feel like we made this statement last time, and obviously we didnt continue to play great," Verlander said. "I think...

Tigers Proving That Winning Divisions Only Easy on Paper

It wasn’t supposed to go down like this. As August turns to September in this sometimes God forsaken 2012 baseball season, this isn’t whatTigers fans had in mind for Labor Day weekend. The worries were supposed to be the usual for this time of the year: getting the kids back to school; figuring out what to throw on the grill as the outdoor cooking season winds down; wondering...

DETROIT (AP) -- Jim Leyland loaded the lineup with lefties against Justin Masterson, then watched his Detroit Tigers struggle to another loss. Afterward, there wasn't a hint of panic in his voice. "I'm not frustrated," Leyland said. "I'm not going to change. We've been the same all year. We come here ready to do our job and do our best." Don...

Leyland: There's been no letdown after White Sox series

After gaining a tie for first in the AL Central during the weekend, Detroit fell back when it lost Monday while Chicago was beating the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers lost a second consecutive one-run game to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, falling...

The Detroit Tigers (72-61) completed the sweep of the Chicago White Sox (72-61), 4-1. Detroit’s Justin Verlander (8 IP, 11 SO, 1ER) pitched eight innings of 1-run ball, proving why he is the reigning American League MVP and Cy Young award winner and why his name should be in the discussions again. This time Indians starter Justin Masterson feasted on Tigers hitters...
