FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal has learned that Boston Red Sox shortstop, Julio Lugo will be designated for assignment before Friday’s game.
This was a signing that should have never happened in the first place. I have no idea what Theo Epstein was thinking when he signed Lugo to a four-year, $36 million deal back in the winter of 2007.

According to multiple reports, Julio Lugo will be either traded or designated for assignment before Friday's game.
It will likely be the latter because nobody wants Lugo.
I'd prefer the Red Sox to have traded Lugo so that Boston could get something in return (probably nothing more than a Pepsi and a slice of pizza...from the Nationals) instead of just removing him from...

Pedro Martinez signed yesterday with the Philadelphia Phillies, a one-year deal worth about $1 million.My initial reaction was: sadness. Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic says a team source indicated that the Diamondbacks could revisit the idea of an Eric Byrnes-Julio Lugo swap now that Lugo's been designated for assignment. Byrnes is currently on the disabled list with a broken hand. The two teams had discussions about such a swap in the offseason, but the talks went nowhere.
