Blogging the Offseason is a 30 team series in which I ask a blogging representative from each MLB team a series of ten questions about their desires and thoughts surrounding the offseason. Check out all of them here.
Today's AL team is the Seattle Mariners and our guest is Griffin from the Mariners Blog, Sodo Mojo.1. What do the Mariners need to do this offseason to truly make them a contender for the AL West crown in 2010?
They have to sign or acquire a legitimate #2 starter, figure out the third base situation, and sign a real DH. The Mariners had the worst DH production in baseball in 2009, and there's no way they contend without significantly improving on that. As for their pitching, right now it's pretty much Felix, then a bunch of back of the rotation guys. To make that rotation respectable they'll have to get some middle of the rotation help.2. I've locked you, your owner and your GM in a room and am forcing you to trade King Felix. What would you need to get in re...

Jose Lopez appears to be on his way out
Last Friday, when Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik announced that Dustin Ackley would begin working out at second base, he took great pains to state that this has little to do with incumbent second baseman Jose Lopez.
On the surface, that may be true. Ackley won't be in the majors as a regular before at least the 2011 season and the team will obviously need a second baseman before then...
With M's moving Ackley to 2B, Lopez may be expendable
Sporting News staff reports
The Seattle Times speculates the Mariners will trade second baseman Jose Lopez before next season, although the News-Tribune of Tacoma, Wash., says there's no market for him.
Lopez hit 25 homers and drove in 96 runs this past season, but he had only a .303 on-base percentage and isn't considered a strong defensive player. Plus, Seattle...
Erik Bedard already has some free agent suitors
Bet most of you forgot about this guy, huh? In all of the off-season discussion I've heard about what the Mariners have to do, the name Erik Bedard seldom comes up. That's understandable, given how no one is certain exactly when he'll make it back to a mound in 2010.
The Mariners are approaching him as they would any other free agent -- meaning they will exercise plenty of caution...
The Josh Wilson Era Has Ended
According to the Baseball America transaction logs the Seattle Mariners have granted Josh Wilson his release after removing him from the 40-man roster last week.
This shouldn’t be newsworthy considering Josh Wilson is a journeyman infielder who isn’t very good, but there have been enough fans out there who have made it clear that they prefer [...]
Josh Wilson opts for free agency
Well, at least we won't have to worry about confusing the two "J. Wilson'' names on the lineup card anymore. Mariners infielder Josh Wilson, outrighted to Class AAA last Friday, has declined to accept that assignment and opted instead to become a free agent.
Wilson hit .250 in 45 games for the Mariners this past season. He was primarily a backup infielder but got into far more games...
Bedard and the Orioles
Geoff Baker in Seattle notes that the Orioles may end up with Erik Bedard:
This story in the Baltimore Sun indicates that Bedard is at the top of the Baltimore Orioles’ wish list. How big a coup would that be for O’s president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail? Not only does he get to reap the [...]
Jose Lopez Likely Staying Put In Seattle
The Seattle Mariners appear ready to head into 2010 with Jose Lopez as their starting second baseman, according to Larry LaRue of The News Tribune. The Mariners considered Lopez, who turned 26 yesterday, one of their few trade chips heading into the offseason, but they've received very little interest. Although Lopez is still young and provides power from second base (25 homers last...
Clock starts now on Edgar Martinez's Hall-of-Fame candidacy

Buzz: The Mets have Called on Branyan
Yesterday, Tim Brown of Yahoo! made a simple post to Twitter that read, “The Mets have called on Russell Branyan.”
…hmm, did they call on him to join the Flushing Flash… or, did they call on him to make cupcakes… or, did they call on him for some other reason…
Nevertheless, Adam, the Brooklyn Met [...]
Mariners Interested In Nick Johnson
The Mariners are interested in free agent first baseman Nick Johnson, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com. Johnson has also heard from the Giants, Mets, and Yankees. Despite their interest in Johnson, the Mariners are still negotiating with Russell Branyan, and they've also discussed Lyle Overbay with the Blue Jays. Toronto appears willing to pay some...

Mets take 'first' look at veterans
The Mets continue to look at potential one-year platoon options at first base, reportedly checking in yesterday with well-traveled Russell Branyan and Nick Johnson.
Branyan, who turns 34 next month, is coming off a year in which he hit .251 with a...
Phillies Targeting Beltre?
The Phillies are targeting free agent Adrian Beltre, according to Randy Miller of the Bucks County Courier Times. Money could be an issue; Beltre, 30, could be seeking a four-year deal. Additionally, Beltre is represented by Scott Boras.
Mark DeRosa, a personal favorite of Charlie Manuel, is still an option as well as Placido Polanco and Pedro Feliz. A [...]
