Just hours after the Boston Red Sox declined their option on catcher Jason Varitek, he has decided to exercise his player option worth $3 million. He can make an additional $2 million in incentives based on the number of games he starts.

Jason Varitek must decide on his $3MM option by midnight tonight, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. Varitek must choose between his Red Sox ties and more playing time (and perhaps less money) elsewhere. We'll keep you updated.

Jason Varitek decided to stay with the Red Sox rather than test free agency. Maybe he figures it’s better to be a backup on a very good team than a starter on a poor one. I wonder how many teams had a part-time player as the captain?
