Braves third baseman Chipper Jones was held out of the lineup Sunday with a strained oblique and lower back pain. Since his batting average reached a season-high .335 on June 9, Jones is hitting .232 (59 for 254) over his last 70 games. He has only eight hits in his last 66 at-bats since Atlanta's 4-1 loss to Philadelphia on Aug. 16. Atlanta manager Bobby Cox hopes Jones can return to the lineup Tuesday when the Braves begin a three-game series at Houston.

Game Thread: Reds at Atlanta — SWEEP EDITION

Can the Reds sweep the hated Atlanta Braves? What’s that, you say? You don’t particularly hate the Braves? Well, you didn’t grow up in a house with a younger brother who was as fanatic about Atlanta as I was about Cincinnati. That bred plenty of contempt for the Bravos. Anyway, Johnny Cueto makes another unnecessary start today. Let’s hope Dusty doesn’...

After Playoff Hopes Swept Away, Atlanta Braves Should Focus on 2010

The week got off to a great start, with the Braves winning the first two games in Florida. The rest of the week showed that only a miracle would get the Braves into the playoffs in 2009. To be realistic, the Braves would have to go 20-5 over the last four weeks of the season and have the Rockies go 13-12 or worse to even get a one-game playoff. The Braves' offense showed over...

Jason Heyward Called Up to Gwinnett

As the Braves playoff hopes faded away this weekend, not all news was upsetting.  On Saturday, Atlanta promoted its top prospect Jason Heyward from AA Mississippi to AAA Gwinnett.  Heyward, who will be playing for his third minor league team this year, hit .296 for Class A Myrtle Beach and .352 for Mississippi.  His AA numbers were very encouraging, showcasing his...

2009 Atlanta Braves Season Review: How Can They Improve in 2010?

I understand the season is not over yet and the Braves still have a small chance, to get in the playoffs in 2009. However, there is no way to improve the current team, so I think it is fair to write an early review for the 2009 Braves and their weaknesses and possible improvement from free agency and trade in 2010.   I did not believe they had a chance to get in the playoffs...

Game 137 Recap: Reds 4, Braves 2

by John Amis - AP Tim Hudson's terrific start was not enough for the Atlanta Braves and their suddenly dormant offense. View full size photo uploaded September 6, 2009 If I had to pick a low point of the season for the Atlanta Braves, I would say this is just about it. I guess I should be happy that we scored as many runs today as we have in the past two games, but I'...

Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 9/6

Charlotte 1, Gwinnett 4 W. Timmons 2-3 2B, 3B J. Heyward 2-4 RBI, K, SB(1) C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 2BB 2K On the season, Craig Kimbrel has 103 K and 30 hits allowed in only 60 innings of work. The flip side to that coin is he has 45 BB in that same span. If he can somehow harness his control he is going to be dominant. But those walks will catch up to him in the Show. Also of...
