Brett Gardner became the first Yankee since 1999 to record a walkoff hit in 6 career games or less. His single up the middle in the 10th inning against All Star closer Jonathan Papelbon gave the Yanks a 5-4 win and he recorded his first multi-hit game in the process. Since the 5?10 outfielder was called up last week he began his career with only one hit in 16 at-bats before last nights game. The rookie showed patience against Papelbon and was not intimidated falling behind 0-2 and then evening the count before his third career hit on the seventh pitch of the at bat which scored Robinson Cano. Gardner is the full time leftfielder with Jonny Damon going on the DL for the first time in his 14-year career spanning over 1927 games.
The 24-year old was a third round choice in the 2005 draft. As a leadoff hitter for the College of Charleston he recorded a .447 batting average, 85 runs and 38 steals in his senior season. In his minor league career the lefty hit .288, .381 OBP and has stole 114 bases. At Triple A he stole 55 bases at a 83% success rate.
"(Gardner) creates a lot of havoc when he's on the bases. He changes the defense," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's constant pressure on pitchers when he's on base, to pay attention to him."
In his six games with the Yankees he has scored 4 runs, walked 3 times and stole 3 bases. The Yankees are nine games back and take on the first place Rays tomorrow. Gardner needs to be that consistent sparkplug for the Yanks to get back into the Wild Card race.
"With Johnny on the DL and Brett taking over, it's a good opportunity for him to show what he can do," Girardi said. "He has speed and you know he's going to cover a lot of ground in the outfield. He's kind of in the same mold of a Johnny Damon."

Payday for Paps
(Photo from the Boston Herald)Jonathan Papelbon is stoked. As he should be. He's going to be making $775,000 next season. Which is less than the apparently $900K he thought he was owed but is still a hefty chunk of change. I wonder if I should start negotiating like Papelbon. Just start holding news ...
Fantasy Philosophy: Search for the Comeback Kids
People remember the here and now most, they remember the pain and suffering from last season and they remember the joy from last season. The previous years are kind of just blended in the background of the memory. In a draft you must expose this. You must look for players that had a down year that you think will bounce back, they will come at a bargain basement price.Take Aaron Harang...

Center Field Decision Coming Soon, But Both Candidates Should Make Team
From Pat Borzi:Going into the final weekend of spring training, the Yankees still have decisions pending on a handful of jobs. Center field is one. Manager Joe Girardi said he already had a “pretty good idea” of his choice, which he would most likely make final Sunday after meeting with General Manager Brian Cashman and the coaches. Cabrera has also had a good spring, batting...

Arod Fails In Must Win For Yankees
I like Alex Rodriguez. I really do. I think that he's the best and most exciting player in baseball today. I also feel bad for those Yankee fans who truly dislike him because they are missing out on one of the best ball players in the history of the game.
But then there are night like last night where it is almost impossible to defend him.
In the biggest game of the season...
Lots of Big Developments
Morrow Picks the Pen
Brandon Morrow has gone the way of Jonathan Papelbon and announced that he doesn’t feel comfortable in the starting rotation, primarily due to health concerns (diabetes), and that he will fill the closer’s role for good. He apparently made this decision a week or two ago. (Geoff Baker)
Given the similarities of Papelbon’s [...]
Giambi's Struggles Continue, but Girardi Remains Confident

"I think his at-bats have been pretty good," Joe Girardi said. "Like I've said all along, he's run into bad luck. He's hit some balls hard. I really don't have any concerns...
Brett Gardner Should Have Been Announced as the Yankee CF Much Earlier
One of my “virtues” has been having a great idea, but not running with it right away. Such has been the case with my thoughts on Brett Gardner, as I have been meaning to write about him for quite awhile. Within a day or so, Yankee manager Joe Girardi will take his cue from GM [...]

According to Newsday, Manager Joe Girardi plans to bat Derek Jeter leadoff this year, and drop Johnny Damon to the 2-hole. Girardi indicates that he is impressed with Damon as a 2, but as Kat O’Brien speculates, this also likely means that Brett Gardner has indeed won the CF spot from Melky Cabrera. Girardi may [...]
