Faith and Fear:

TEAMS: Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels
During this postseason, I've rooted against the Cardinals. Tonight I'm rooting against the Yankees. For as long as they survive and skip Pedro Martinez, I'll be rooting against the Phillies. But this afternoon I rooted for the Angels and, for the first time in a while where my positive baseball affinity is concerned, I've been rewarded.
The Angels have been my Second Team since 2002 (with my auxiliary appreciation since 1986). It's an admittedly light affiliation, but it's tangible enough for me to sincerely enjoy their bouts of success when I'm not otherwise immersed in my First Team. Thus, I was quite delighted when erstwhile nemesis Bobby Abreu and all-time favorite opponent Vladimir Guerrero pooled their combined talents to slay the annoying closer of Red Sox Nation (an inning after our erstwhile Sandman made like an Orange County alarm clock and helped awaken the sleeping Angel bats). Most pleasant game of the postseason thus far. No ballpark look...

Breaking news: J.A. Happ will start Game 3 Sunday
Thanks to today's postponement, Charlie Manuel will hand it off to left-hander J.A. Happ for tomorrow night's make-up game, rather than previously scheduled starter Pedro Martinez, who hasn't pitched since Sept. 30. Happ (12-4, 2.93) tossed a complete-game shutout against Colorado Aug. 5, striking out 10. The Phils are lined up to start all lefties against the Rockies this series.
Helping the Phillies
Phillies Nation notes how the white out helped the Phillies in the LDS:
Third, and probably the most important advantage the postponing gave the Phillies, was it gave them the ability to set their rotation how they wanted to finish the series. Pedro Martinez was originally scheduled to get the ball for last nights game, now [...]

On Baseball: Manuel hoping for a glimpse of vintage Pedro
The last time Pedro Martinez was on this kind of stage, he was already done being the unstoppable ace who lit up Fenway Park from 1998 to 2003, the right-handed pitcher whose mound presence was so commanding and whose change-up was so filthy, it rendered a surname pointless. That kind of a run doesn't last forever, and when Martinez pitched for the Boston Red Sox in the 2004...
Will Charlie Manuel’s Second Thoughts Burn the Phillies?
The extra day off in the Phillies/Rockies series gave pitcher J.A. Happ an extra day to recover from being hit by a comebacker and likewise an extra day for Charlie Manuel to contemplate his starter. In the end, Manuel decided to go with Happ over Pedro Martinez because he prefers to have a lefty [...]

The Best Baseball Decade of My Life
As the suddeness of the ending of the baseball season happened today, I thought about the fact that the next Red Sox game I see will be in a brand new decade: the 2010s. (Good Lord, where did the time go?) And with the decade of the 2000s ending, I looked back on it with some amazement. The Red Sox ended the 1990s with an ALCS loss, and with little success in the first two years of...
The Philadelphia Phillies change starting pitchers for Sunday’s game
The Phillies have decided to go with lefty J.A. Happ instead of Pedro Martinez in this game. Happ pitched in 35 games (23 starts) for the Phillies this season and he was 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. He has been kryptonite to Rockies’ hitters this season. He has pitched in 2 [...]
