The maddening Scott Downs slump of the last four weeks isn't so mysterious now. It's hard to pitch effectively when your left foot is in constant pain. The other cleat dropped with the Toronto closer Sunday as he was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The club feels Downs might have come back from his previous foot injury and it's anyone's guess as to when Downs will be back this season. The Blue Jays, as you probably know, are buried under 15 feet of snow in the AL East and they're 11.5 games out of the wild card (and behind six clubs). It's time to think about 2010, when hopefully someone else is in charge of this rudderless ship.Alas, fantasy owners still need to negotiate 2009. "We want him to make sure [Downs] is healthy this time he comes back," Cito Gaston told the team's official site. "I'm not sure [when he'll be back]. It won't be anytime soon."Jason Frasor steps into the ninth-inning void with Downs out, and the...

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Toronto Blue Jays closer Scott Downs was placed on the disabled list Sunday after aggravating the injured left big toe that landed him on the DL earlier this season.

2009 NL Rookie of the Year candidates breakdown

Harry mentioned in the game thread that it would be interesting to see how Wells stacks up with J.A. Happ in this year’s Rookie of the Year race. I added a few other rookies who have been performing well. The result about Happ/Wells wasn’t that surprising, but some of the other players took me by surprise. Series Preview: Yankees @ Blue Jays

Yankees @ Blue Jays@ Rogers Centre(two games)I'll be honest, I don't have much to say about this series besides that these two pitching matchups scare me a lot. Tonight they have to face Roy Halladay, then tomorrow Sergio Mitre will get the start against Marc Rzepczynski, a left-hander the Yankees have never seen. So with that in mind I'm going into this series hoping...

Delgado & Beltran taking baby steps on way back to lineup

Carlos Delgado finally was back in the batter's box launching home runs. And Carlos Beltran finally was back in center field tracking fly balls Monday at Citi Field.

New York Yankees (63-42) at Toronto Blue Jays (51-54), 7:07 p.m.

Roy Halladay is still with the Toronto Blue Jays, much to the chagrin of the New York Yankees.

Odds & Ends: O's, Halladay, Pirates

Some links as we ponder what team might be desperate enough to pick up Sidney Ponson: Peter Schmuck at the Baltimore Sun notes that the George Sherrill trade sends mixed signals about whether the Orioles believe they can contend in 2010. Nick Cafardo at the Boston Globe has a lot of interesting stuff from Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi in the aftermath of the Roy Halladay...
