It hasn't been much of a year for Ryan Doumit(notes) – he missed two months with a busted wrist and he hasn't hit much when he's been on the field (.219 for the year, .182 in August). And the lost season may have taken a turn for the worse Friday when he apparently did something to tick off manager John Russell. Doumit went 0-for-3 at Milwaukee before heading to the showers, and after the game Russell let it be known – somewhat evasively – that he was hot at his starting catcher. Russell said the removal was "between me and Ryan" and he also confirmed that the backstop isn't hurt. Doumit's in an odd position with the club these days. He's become the longest-tenured Pirate after the summer trading frenzy, and he's been open about his displeasure with the direction of the club. Perhaps some of that frustration is what's come to a head here. Either way, prudent fantasy owners have to move on and look for reliable catching prod...

Pirates manager keeps Doumit out of lineup
Neither John Russell nor Ryan Doumit would clarify what was said between them in the dugout Friday night that made the manager yank the catcher.
Let's win one in Milwaukee
Forget a sweep or a series win, the Pirates just badly need a victory in Miller Park right now. Today represents a pretty good chance to do so. The ever-evolving Ross Ohlendorf takes the mound for the Pirates, hoping that his increase in velocity can translate to another win over the struggling Jeff Suppan. If the Pirates don't win in Miller Park today, it might not ever happen...
Jones' 8th-inning homer sends Pirates past Phils
PITTSBURGH(AP) J.A. Happ looked like a rookie on the key pitch of the game, and Garrett Jones didn't. The result was the National League's best first-year pitcher was beaten by arguably its best first-year hitter, and the Pirates pulled off another surprising comeback against the Phillies.
Game, set slips away from Phillies as bats go silent
Garrett Jones' two-out, two-run jack in the eighth spoiled a terrific night by J.A. Happ, proving to be the difference in the Pirates' 3-2 victory in the series' rubber match. Beautiful park. Ugly results. In front of a sea of red, the Phillies fell to 11-17 lifetime at PNC Park in a series that will be remembered for a pair of late-inning losses, blown saves and poor...
One Bad Pitch
J.A. Happ was on his way to his eleventh win, Thursday night in Pittsburgh. The rookie southpaw had a 2-1 lead, with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, and the Phils were on their way to winning two of three from the Pirates. Happ delivered a 1-1 pitch to Pittsburgh's Garrett Jones, attempting to throw a fastball away. Happ's offering was near the center of the plate,...
Trying to keep a good thing rolling
One thing that never fails to amuse me is when people rant and rave about being unable to see a good team play baseball at PNC Park. In actuality, the Pirates have a very good record at PNC this year (35-29, with a pythag to back it up) and the worst winning percentage they've had at PNC in the last three years is .457 in 2007. Actually, the very worst overall record they'...
The Rookie Show
It was supposed to be a battle of big-time ROY candidates…J.A. Happ vs. Andrew McCutchen. Cutch had the early advantage with a leadoff homer and another hit. Happ got him out the next two times, though, and pitched into the 8th inning with a 2-1 lead.
Then, another rookie who everyone had temporarily forgotten stepped in:
2-run [...]
