Cubs won't win World Series until they clean house

This is not about a billy goat, a Bartman, or some new Century Club Curse hanging over the Chicago Cubs. Yes, the Cubs haven't won a World Series in over 100 years now, but it's no longer about a lack of talent or a propensity to choke. Everybody wants to bury the Mets this week for their underachieving ways, but at least their struggles can be largely related to their lineup...

All Star Update-Southern League

Posted by Lionel on June 29, 2009.I previously announced the Class A minor league All Stars via the weekly ATAtM, but I decided to profile the numerous Tennessee Smokies who made the Southern League All Star team separately. Here are the six:Jay Jackson-This was an obvious selection. While his 4-3, 3.15 ERA overall doesn't jump out, his 4-0 record and 1.55 ERA in the last 9 starts...

Milton Bradley Takes the High Road

It's anger management day at SoSG! We noted Milton Bradley's latest tantrum this weekend, wondering why Cubs manager Lou Piniella felt the need to single out this incident in a season that has featured so many. Upon further inspection, it turns out Bradley is able to calm down right quick. From the Chicago Sun-Times: According to sources, Piniella then shouted at Bradley...

Cubs drop two out of three on the South Side

I hope everyone had a better weekend than the Chicago Cubs did as they dropped two out of three games on the South side of town to the crosstown rivals. The White Sox pretty much had their way in the three game series and the biggest highlight for the Cubs was probably the altercation between Lou Piniella and Milton Bradey on Friday.

Leave Carlos Zambrano Alone

Good ol’ Phil Rogers never disappoints. Here’s a bit of his (over) reactionary piece about Big Z’s performance on Sunday against the White Sox. Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He’s not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and at this point, [...]

NL Notes: Brewers' Jeffress suspended 100 days

OF Sam Fuld was recalled from Class AAA Iowa to replace IF Aaron Miles, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended right elbow. Pitching prospect Jeremy Jeff ress, the team’s top pick in 2006, was suspended for 100 games after his third violation of the minor league drug program.

The Return of Rich Harden

Rich Harden pitches his best game of the season, going seven innings against the Pirates, giving up one run, one walk and striking out nine. Harden’s ERA goes down to 4.57, still over one run higher than his career mark. He didn’t give up a home run, which was his problem this season. [...]

Great Moments in Selection Bias

Yesterday, the Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers opined -- ridiculously, I noted -- that the Cubs should waive Carlos Zambrano. Tribune readers agree: Your team wants Carlos Zambrano? Go ahead, take him. That's what I proposed after Zambrano turned in another knuckleheaded performance on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field. I suggested Cubs GM Jim Hendry put him on waivers and essentially...

CUBS IN BRIEF: Ramirez may return in week

PITTSBURGH -- Aramis Ramirez's long-awaited return from the disabled list should come before the Cubs' four-game showdown with Mark DeRosa and his St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field just before the All-Star break.

NL beat: Milton Bradley back in lineup for Cubs after meltdown

Cubs manager Lou Piniella put Milton Bradley back in the lineup a day after the emotional outfielder's meltdown during a game.

Cubs shuffle bullpen, bring up Jeff Samardzija

It's time to waive bye-bye to Big Z

As Lou Piniella was saying on Friday, enough's enough. Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He's not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and at this point, it's wishful thinking that he'll ever mature into one. Audio: Zambrano, Wise on the 6th inning altercation

Ozzie has Lou's back

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had no problem with the way Cubs manager Lou Piniella handled the Milton Bradley drama Friday. As a matter of fact, he applauded it. Guillen's problem? There should have been 24 others who policed it beforehand, rather than it escalating to the point it did with the Cubs' skipper.

Chicago Cubs (35-36) at Chicago White Sox (36-38), 2:05 p.m.

Carlos Zambrano tries to stretch his unbeaten streak to six starts this afternoon when the Chicago Cubs play the rubber match of their three-game Windy City Series with the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
