How much of a following has Pirate SuperFan/Anti-Dentite Ronnie Florian acquired over the past year? His story has been well-chronicled on this site, which has become his unofficial internet fan club. So you can imagine the variety of "Did you just see that?" emails I received after Florian was apparently spotted last night on the Pirate telecast chasing a ground-rule double ball that Mark Loretta hit into the PNC Park stands. Mike T. from Pittsburgh had perhaps the best summary: "I swear to God, I'm watching the Pirates game, there's 1 out in the top of the 7th and Loretta just hit a ground rule double.... A guy seems to have possession of the ball, bounces around, and like a bat out of hell, Florian dives into the screen in a futile attempt to get the souvenir.. I wish I had video proof to send you, but keep your eye out." So tell me, does anyone out there happen to have any video proof of this moment? The inbox at mondesishouse@gmail.com is begging f...

VOTE FOR PEDRO

PEDRO ALVAREZ 3B - VANDERBILT6'2", 225 LBSBATS LEFT - THROWS RIGHTWell, no one can complain like we did last year, because this time the Pirates did take the best available player, Vanderbilt 3B Pedro Alvarez, in the MLB draft. Alvarez is what the Pirates have previously shied away from in the first round: a left-handed bat with huge power potential for PNC Park. For the second year...

College versus Pro: The decision is personal

Today is the first day of August. Fall approaches, but so does the signing deadline for teams to lock up players that were selected in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. We are only fourteen days away from knowing which unsigned players will be returning/first going to college and who will forgo the college experience in favor of accepting a bonus with his team and start playing Minor...

WARNING: SCOTT BORAS IS THE DEVIL

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball BlogScott Boras is currently representing the second overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pedro Alvarez. He is expected to be one of the best players in the coming years and should be on the fast track to the major leagues. The signing deadline for the MLB draft was August 15th at midnight stating that no players...

A Look at the Top Talented Prospects in the 2008 Draft

This year's amateur draft isn't very diverse compared to previous years. Many scouts and crosscheckers I've recently talked to feel that there is no obvious superstar talent pick that is a consensus overall pick. Several of the scouts feel that besides the top four talents (SS Georgia HS Tim Beckman,Vanderbilt 3B Pedro Alvarez, RHP Missouri HS Aaron Crow, and LHP Missouri Brian Matsuz...

MLB Amateur Draft 2008: My Draft Board + Pedro Alvarez Scouting Report

With the MLB amateur draft approaching, I thought it would be a good time to start profiling some of the young talent that may be coming to a team near you. Generally speaking, this draft does not have a consensus top prospect, like a Justin Upton or David Price, so it's anyone's guess who the top pick will be and the Tampa Bay Rays are thought to be deciding between Buster...

NOAH WELCH IS DONATING HIS BRAIN

To be perfectly honest with you, I devoted much of my alloted MH writing time for the day to another "behind enemy lines"-style preview, this week for the Blogimore Ravens site, run by Dewey Hammond, who doubles as managing editor of Yardbarker.com, the blog network you've come to know and love. That means I had to pass over coverage of a lot of great stories, including Pedro Alvarez...

Scott Boras is Being a Greedy Bum

Well, we always knew that, but today he and Pedro Alvarez have taken things to new heights. Scary heights for Pirates fans.--It's very complicated, but basically here's what happened today: Boras--who is unhappy with the lower-than-expected $6M signing bonus (it happened because Boras and Pirates couldn't do a deal, so Pedro stepped in and accepted the offer at the deadline) is trying...

JOSE BAUTISTA A BLUE JAY

Earlier this afternoon, the Pirates consummated a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays that sent 3B Jose Bautista north of the border for the always-intriguing Minor Leaguer To Be Named Later.Rather than bore you with statistics, I'll limit my coverage to an email that our very own A.J. sent me a few hours after the deal that pretty much summarizes what it's like to be a baseball fan...

GameDay #144 at Astros

Pirates (60-83) at Astros (77-67)8:05--Minute Maid Park, HoustonRoss Ohlendorf (1-1, 6.26) vs. Randy Wolf (9-11, 4.47)[Preview]----------Alright, so maybe I'm not giving the Astros enough credit. They ARE 10 games over .500 and have the best record in baseball since the All Star Break. My point is, if they do not make the playoffs (which is still a tough task for them at the moment...

News and Notes--Oct. 14

A few anniversaries in Pirate-land to mention today...-Surely you've heard about the yearly gathering at "The Wall" to relive Maz's 1960 World Series winning/walk-off homer against the Yankees. This year it seemed to get more publicity than ever, and [Joey Porter's Pit Bulls] made the trip yesterday.-The other anniversary is not one Bucs fans wish to relive. [Braves.today.com] points...
