I think that the highlight of this game was Chris Bootcheck striking out two hitters in the sixth inning to drop his ERA to 21.60. That should pretty much tell you exactly what you need to know about this one. We did manage to draw four walks off of Jiminez in his eight innings, but then we coupled that with three hits and that's bad. Kevin Hart's velocity was pretty good tonight but he looked awfully hittable. That's probably an effect of the thin air on the sinking action of his fastball, though it didn't really affect Ohlendorf much last night. I know this sort of loss is really a downer since we've now lost nine of ten, but it's really only the second time we've really gotten squashed in those nine losses, which says something. It doesn't necessarily say something good, but it does say something.

The Very Quotable Bronson Arroyo

Goddamn these are some refreshing quotes Bob Nightengale got from Bronson Arroyo: At the end of the day, you think anybody really (cares) whether Manny Ramirez’s kidneys fail and he dies at 50? It might be dangerous, but so is drinking and driving. And how many of us do it at least once a year? Pretty much everybody.” Well ain’t that a hoot, America is a nation...

Catching up; Jon Meloan claimed and Ross Ohlendorf's fastball

Two quick notes to catch up after spending all day in my "written comps deprivation chamber." The first is that the Pirates claimed Jon Meloan off of waivers from Tampa today. When I saw Tampa DFA'd him last week, I thought to myself, "the Pirates should claim him." You can decide whether it's a good thing or not that Huntington and I are on the same wavelength...

Game 115: Pirates at Cubs

Charlie Morton vs. Randy Wells at 2:20 PM.

Second Guessing

I have seen a flurry of articles and posts recently on how well Ronnie Cedeno is playing.  I might add he is playing well enough to make a few fans miss Jack Wilson a little less.  That is not the point of this post, I am going to focus on the other half of the Pittsburgh Pirates double play combination. Over the course of the last dozen or so games, I have notice Delwyn...

Game 113 Live Blog: Pirates at Rockies

B.U.C.C.O. Fans.com joins several other Pirates blogs in a live blog of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies game on 8/12.

Rockies lose one to lowly Pirates, 7-3

The Pittsburgh Pirates came to town lugging eight straight losses, burdened by a 3-17 record in their last 20 road games and staring at seven consecutive losses at Coors Field.

Game 115, Yankees at Mariners

Stupid Yankees. Ian Snell’s gotta get late in the game, or it’s Batista for us. Yankees are missing Alex tonight, which is great, because then no one has to boo and everyone not booing doesn’t have to sigh and roll their eyes. Meanwhile, on the M’s side, Wakamatsu hates me. Nyjer Morgan: How Valuable Is Defense (Part One)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make an assumption. I'll assume for a moment that the majority of our readers have either read or at least understand the premise of the book Moneyball. However, what a good deal of people don't know is that Billy Beane himself shifted focus shortly after Moneyball was released.See, the underlying point of that book isn't about...

Pittsburgh Pirates Marooned For Yet Another Year

With last night's win over the Colorado Rockies, the Pittsburgh Pirates end their eight-game losing streak, the longest in the MLB this season—not to mention all eight games were at home. The Pirates also hold the longest losing streak on the road with five consecutive losses. After another long and disgusting season, September and the end couldn't be nearing any sooner...

Pittsburghs Pirates Face Uphill Struggle In Colorado's Mile High Stadium

This evening, the Pittsburgh Pirates begin a late summer rematch with the Colorado Rockies, following an original series last spring. The circumstances of the two matches could not be more different. Last spring, the Pirates were coming out of the cellar in the National League Central. Now they are stuck there, and hoping not to get deeper. Then, the Rockies were fellow cellar-dwellers...

Did The Yankees Give Up Too Soon On Ross Ohlendorf?

When you look back at some of the trades the Yankees have made, you wonder about some of the younger players that left and never got a chance to fully develop. One player immediately comes to mind and that's Ross Ohlendorf. Some of the newer Yankee fans may not remember him pitching, mostly because he wasn't on the team for very long. Two years ago, Ohlendorf was part of...
