PHOENIX – Pinch hitter Fred Lewis beat out a double-play grounder with the bases loaded to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Monday night to breathe a bit of life into their playoff hopes. The victory moved the Giants within four games of idle Colorado in the National League wild-card chase with 12 games to play. Mark Reynolds drove in two runs with his 43rd homer of the season, and Justin Upton's single scored the other two for Arizona. Pablo Sandoval doubled and singled for the Giants, who took advantage of three Diamondbacks errors. Jeremy Affeldt threw a scoreless eighth for his major league-leading 32nd hold. Brian Wilson allowed a two-out single to Stephen Drew in the ninth, then struck out Upton looking on a 3-2 pitch for his 35th save. Reliever Esmerling Vasquez (3-3) walked Travis Ishikawa to lead off the eighth, then Aaron Rowand laid down a near-perfect bunt. Vasquez and sec...

Giants Can’t Miss Prospect (Allegedly) Didn’t Miss, Faces Murder Charges

Every franchise has highly-touted prospects that, for one reason or another, don’t meet expectations. Sometimes their dominance at the high school, collegiate or minor league levels doesn’t translate to success in the majors. But seldom does murder play a role in a blue chip ballplayer falling short. Angel Villalona, a 19-year-old first base prospect in the San Francisco...

Zito has much to say to Zito

Watch Barry Zito when he pitches in Arizona tonight. You will notice him talking up a storm. Jay Leno could not keep up with Zito's monologues when he stands on the rubber. Zito knows he is doing it, and always has in the majors, but said he was not aware it...

San Francisco Giants: Why Bruce Bochy's Contract Shouldn't Be Extended

Throughout the entirety of the 2009 season for the Giants, there have been numerous "head scratching" decisions made by their manager, Bruce Bochy. Continually not bunting runners over from second to third with nobody out and putting on the hit and run in precarious situations are just a couple of those head scratching decisions that come to mind. For example, when the Giants were...

…. And so it begins

With the end in sight, the stories begin as everyone tries to understand why: …. Bruce Bochy’s decision-making with his outfielders this year has left a lot to be desired, and in no case is that more obvious than his decision to bury Lewis in favor of Nate Schierholtz, and to a lesser extent Eugenio Velez, [...]

Post-Game 150 Thread: Thumping Timmy

DODGERS 6, GIANTS 2 Good night, sweet Giants. The Dodgers greeting a tired Tim Lincecum today almost as rudely as they did Brad Penny yesterday, combined with another Rockies win, has effectively killed San Francisco's playoff chances. Today's offensive heroes are all-of-a-sudden-but-not-really MVP candidate Andre Ethier (with a two-run homer, his 31st, in the third inning...

San Francisco Giants (81-69) at Arizona Diamondbacks (65-86), 9:40 p.m.

The Giants' Matt Cain hasn't had his best stuff as of late, but he has had little trouble when facing the Diamondbacks this year. Cain will try to get back in the win column tonight, when San Francisco continues a three-game series with Arizona at Chase Field.
