Upon a debate between Schilling and the Red Sox whether he would have season and likely career ending surgery to repair a partially torn labrum or hold off on surgery until after the season, the two sides went to a mediator per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The mediator and both sides agreed to not have the surgery and shut Schilling down until the All Star Break.
