...last night's game gets a two-word review: **** sandwich.I figgered Brad Penny would rise to the occasion, prove the naysayers wrong and crank out the game of his career. Instead, he folded like a deck chair, giving up 8 runs over 4 innings and reminding us all that if the Red Sox ever do happen to make the playoffs, he needs to be as far away from the starting rotation as possible. I'm talking tied-to-the-wings-of-the-space-shuttle far. Also, if I were Terry, I would have left him out there to suffer his way through the entire game just to spare every other arm in the 'pen and make sure he heard it from the crowd for a full nine innings.I am man enough to admit that I thought we might actually stage the comeback of the year in the bottom of the sixth, when we loaded the bases with nobody out and just nine runs back. But then A-Gon grounded into a double play and that fantasy was promptly flushed away.Amazing how far we've fallen since that 8-0 start against the Ya...

Wakefield replaces Penny in the rotation

After a decent first half, Brad Penny has looked horrid in his last few starts, most notably allowing eight earned runs against the Yankees in yesterday’s blowout. In 24 starts this season, Penny has a 7-8 record with a 5.61 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. That not going to cut if for Terry Francona and [...]

FAILHAT Friday Strikes Again

Brad Penny showed he only has a fastball and the Yankees jumped all over it. He was gone in the 5th and Bowden came in for long relief. The FAILHAT's bad mojo rubbed off on Bowden who didn't have much working. The hit parade continued for the Yankees who put up 6 runs in the inning.Jacoby Ellsbury tied the Red Sox stolen base record in the game and the offense did put...

Tarnished Penny: Brad Penny Hurts Red Sox and Must Go

At this point, it's reasonable to ask if Brad Penny will, or should, ever make another start for the Red Sox.Against the Yankees on Friday night, Penny lasted just four innings, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits. In all, the burly righty allowed 11 base runners and recorded just 12 outs in his rather brief outing. With the loss, Penny's record now stands at 7-8, making...

Plugged in

Before yesterday’s game, as Terry Francona discussed his upcoming rotation, he asked for patience. Patience from Brad Penny, and patience from the media, to see what transpired over the next nine innings.

Wakefield to replace struggling Penny in rotation

BOSTON (AP) -- Tim Wakefield will replace struggling Brad Penny in the Boston Red Sox rotation.

Jon Garland or Brad Penny? Who Would You Rather Have, Red Sox Nation?

After Brad Penny's terrible start against the hated New York Yankees, it's time most of Red Sox Nation ask the question:Should Theo designate Penny for assignment? There are good starters avalible, including Arizona's Jon Garland. Garland, 29, is 6-11 this season with a 4.42 ERA and a WHIP 1.44. Not spectacular, but not completely terrible. Garland cleared waivers, and...

Positives

No comment about Friday's game. I didn't see a second of it as I had dinner with a dear friend of mine. And I'm so glad I did.Tim Wakefield pitched what could be his final rehab start with Pawtucket, allowing just two hits and one run against Rochester. He could be activated over the weekend, and pitch either next Wednesday or Thursday against Chicago. The Sox have badly...

Yankees-Red Sox: The Red Sox Domination Guide (Late August Edition)

The New York Yankees (76-45) will meet up with the Boston Red Sox (69-51) for a three-game series at Fenway Park starting tonight. The Red Sox currently hold a one-game Wild Card lead over the Texas Rangers, and a four-game lead over the AL East's third-place team, the Tampa Bay Rays. Undoubtedly, this is a huge series for the Red Sox, who need to take advantage of great pitching...
